Guest guest
Hi All!!! My name is Melody and about 3 weeks ago, I sprouted my first item. I bought a package of Organic lentils, I went on youtube and I watched all the videos. I watched and I watched and I learned. I did not buy any sprout kits, I just used what I had in my house. So far I have sprouted Alfalfa, Fenugreek, zesty salad mix, lentils, and Quinoa. All I do is wash the seeds, soak overnight, and rinse and drain every 12 hours. I then put the alfalfa in indirect sunlight for a while and they a beautiful green color. I thought I would get MORE alfalfa than I got, but I'm still happy. I would love to sprout Broccoli sprouts but I find the seeds are too expensive. So I just take a walk to my local organic store and I buy the fresh broccoli sprouts. I've been eating veggies for years. I want to become a vegetarian but I'm diabetic so I really need my fish. And I'm afraid to eat tofu more than two or three times a week because I heard that it might cause tumors. At least that is what a nurse told me. I've also lost more than 100 lbs total in over 10 years. 50 or so in the past 4. And now that I add sprouts to everything I eat, well I just feel like I'm putting all these good anti-oxidants in my body. I also make veggie patties. I put the sprouts in my food processor, add some fresh onions, some bread crumbs and some egg beaters. Add some no -stick spray (or a bit of canola), and let me tell you, you have a veggie pattie to die for. So I am happy I found some fellow sprouters. If anyone knows another protein source for diabetics (other than soy), I would love to hear it. Thanks so much. And what else can I sprout? I want to be able to just put the seeds in a jar, soak over night and do the 12 hour rinse and drain thing. I don't even have to buy lettuce any more. I just make a sprout salad every day for lunch, add a can of water packed tuna, some fresh tomatoes and I'm in heaven. It really does show up on the scale, believe me. So again, hi to you all. Guest guest
Hey Melody; Welcome to the group! You can find a lot of high quality information at this group's sponsor .com as well as from the people on this group. The Sproutpeople website is a great resource, and even though I have been sprouting for over thirty years it took my sprouting to an entirely new level. I have a few medical problems as a result of being a type 1 diabetic for almost four decades. I remain quite healthy in spite of my medical problems. Are you type 1 or type 2 diabetes? I think that my good health is due to my eating sprouts and the other elements in my diet. You really don't need to eat fish to get enough protein, you are already on the right track by eating sprouts, they all have protein and lentil sprouts are particularly good, and cooked beans are also good (sprouted or not). Tofu is not very healthy (I've never heard the tumor thing though). It's best to eat the bacterial or mold fermented soy products that the Asian people eat. Natural soy sauce and tempeh are the easiest to start with; natto is something I eat only because I feel better when I eat it regularly than when I don't; miso is an acquired taste, but it can be acquired. Congratulations on the weight loss! Lee On Dec 8, 2008, at 1:28 PM, melodylubart1 wrote: > Hi All!!! > > My name is Melody and about 3 weeks ago, I sprouted my first item. Guest guest
I'm a type 2 diabetic. I was diagnosed when I weighed (well let's just say I weighed a lot) and I don't any more. I am completely into nutrition and good eating and healthy cooking. I didn't know that I could get all my protein via the sprouts. This is possible? And what have you heard that is unhealthy about Tofu? I went online (because I had heard stuff) and I read that as long as it's organic Tofu, that this would be okay. Have you heard of something different about Tofu? Thanks much Melody

Guest guest
Can you eat nuts? I'd say they'd be the best protein source! I'm going to try those veggie patties you mentioned, because I have some bean sprouts in the fridge and no one seems to be eating them except me. Perhaps a patty and salad would entice them! Question: how much do you process the sprouts before mixing in the crumbs and egg? Do you want mush or not? Thanks, Connie > > Melody, Legumes (beans, peas, etc.) are excellent sources for protein. > And they are even better for you sprouted! Guest guest
Because of my diabetes, I am limited to how many nuts I can eat in one day. It is because of the natural oils in them. Check with your Dr. or Diabetic Nurse for your limit. ew I have just discovered Sprouting and I > LOVE IT!!! > Date: Mon, 08 Dec 2008 18:28:07 -0000 > > Hi All!!! > > My name is Melody and about 3 weeks ago, I sprouted my first item. Guest guest
Melody, check out .com. There you will see all the things that you can sprout. You don't have to buy if you can't afford to, but it is a good reference. Broccoli seed is expensive, but the benefits are great. Broccoli sprouts are 50 time more nutritious than mature broccoli. As for buying sprouts in the store, ask questions. How is it grown. Probably hydroponics. Which means that it was grown in water full of chemicals. Those chemicals are in the sprouts. In my sprout talks, I suggest to people that they find a friend or two who also sprouts and share the cost of the seeds when buying on line. You can go to a pet food store and buy raw untreated sunflower seeds that are meant for bird food and sprout those. But when you get to a place where you can, go organic. ew Re: I have just discovered Sprouting and I LOVE IT!!! Guest guest
Happy New Year! Dear Ernest: Lots of great tips, as usual - thank you yet again. By the way - I am in Southern California. Where do you present your sprouting talks? I would enjoy seeing your numerous ways of sprouting and hearing lots more tips from you. Are we allowed to attend, or is it just for the clubmembers? Please advise.  Wishing everyone healthy and happy sprouts, Barbara   From: Ernest Willingham <99tomatoes@...> Subject: Re: I have just discovered Sprouting and I LOVE IT!!! Guest guest
I know all about brocolli sprouts. I've been eating them for months now. My local organic place sells them. Too expensive to buy online. I go to .com all the time. I learn lots of stuff on that website. Melody Re: I have just discovered Sprouting and I LOVE IT!!! Guest guest
I tried sprouting the organic sunflower seeds but I got the un-hulled version. BIG MISTAKE. I'll never do that again. Do the sunflower seeds at the store, are they hulled? or unhulled? Thanks much. Melody Re: I have just discovered Sprouting and I LOVE IT!!! I like the simplicity of the jar and I can look at my sprouts every time I come into the kitchen (and I sort of say " hi " to them, too). When I haven't been able to order seeds, I've gone to the health food store bulk section and I've sprouted whole dried organic peas and organic mung beans (both great in stir fries). Guest guest
EW: I have a question about alfalfa sprouts. After 5 or 6 days and all the sprouting is done, and I put them on my window-sill and they green,..well, how do you advise I store them? In my Debbie Meyers green bags? Or in a covered bowl in the fridge. Thank you very much. Melody Re: I have just discovered Sprouting and I LOVE IT!!! Guest guest
What I do after the sprouts are green is I give them a good rinse then I hold a handful at a time over the strainer part of a salad spinner and rinse again, getting most of the hulls off. Then I spin them in the salad spinner to remove most of the moisture and additional seed hulls. I store them in my salad spinner. There are also containers with a bottom slotted insert for produce.
