Re: [Rejuvenation] Deprenyl

I investigated this potential problem of mixing Selective Serotonin Re-uptake

Inhibitors (SSRI's, e.g, Prozac, Zoloft) with selegiline (Deprenyl) a while

back, and while there were some concerns my general conclusion was that it

was a non-problem for normal anti-aging dosages of selegiline.

Problems might occur at doses of approximately 10mg/day of selegiline or more

because at such high doses selegiline inhibits MAO-A as well as MAO-B, but

10mg/day of selegiline is far more than is normally recommended for anti-

aging purposes. And even at these higher doses the problem is far from

obvious. SSRI's are very selective drugs and as such they have only a minor

effect on the neurotransmitters of concern (e.g., dopamine}. SSRI's do little

other than cause an increase in serotonin, which is not in and of itself a

problem in the presence of a MAO inhibitor.

Dear Rampatro,

It is my understanding that Deprenyl is used to inhibit MAO-B, and the

" cheesy " effect applies to MAO-A so I don't think you have to worry

about diet. I used to have a good article on the SSRI (serotonin

secondary reuptake inhibitors), and MAO-A, but I can't find it now.

However if I recall you did have to watch out for the cheesy effect on

them, since they did affect MAO-A. I will look so more and try to pass

on more details.

Someone else on the board should have this info and I think that Gordon

(longevity) has good knowledge on this.

Sorry I could be of more help.
