Hey Sparrow,

You might not see the advise given to diabetics as so contradictory

if you consider that we have two very different diseases going by the

same name. When I tell someone that I have diabetes and they respond,

" I know what that means because my grandmother has diabetes. "

I'm thinking, " No you don't, grandma is type two. "

In type one diabetes you have to use insulin. There is no choice

because your body has killed the insulin producing cells in your

pancreas. I wear an insulin pump that gives me a little insulin

continuously and at meals I count carbs and give myself enough extra

insulin to cover the amount of carbs that I consume. So in type one

diabetes you are always walking the tightrope of hyper and hypo

glycemia (high and low blood sugar). There are definite times when a

poptart or corn syrup sweetened soft drink would save me from a trip

to the emergency room.

Type two diabetics make plenty of insulin in their bodies, they just

don't use it well because of insulin resistance. You wrote earlier

about high fats blocking the insulin receptors of the cells creating

insulin resistance. The first time I read about those studies was in

Pritican's books twenty years ago. The oral medications that

type two diabetics take are designed to help make the insulin that

they do make go further. Much can be done with adjustments in the diet.

I've had type one diabetes since i was 18 years old (I'm 55 now).

Because of it I have had a couple of toes amputated; I spent 5 years

on dialysis, 4 years ago this coming Jan 24 I got a kidney transplant

that has greatly improved the quality of my life, thanks to the

generosity

of people who don't even know me.

Life is good!
