Guest guest
Kathy-jo, I use lots of old seeds, up to 5 years or so. They don't go bad, just have a lower sprouting rate. If it's important to know whether they are good, you can proof them in a wet paper towel in a warm, sunny window. Kathy
Guest guest
I had a bunch of pea seeds I used this year that were old. Some were nearly 6 years old! Seemed like very few did not come up! Most all of them are growing and looking great in my garden right now. I sure can't wait for pea eating while in the garden! Love those peas just picked and popped into your mouth! So how is every one else's gardens doing so far??? We lost a bunch of tomato plants to frost Sat night :-( Thankfully I had plenty started and am going to have enough plants. I normally plant close to 100. My eggplants took a beating with the frost but I think they will come back. We already had radishes from the garden and lettuce that came up voluntarily is nearly ready for some wilted lettuce salad! YUM! Fry some bacon and onions (dice the bacon before frying) add a few tablespoons of vinegar to the cooked bacon and onions and the grease, a tablespoon or two of honey or raw brown sugar, salt and pepper to taste. Heat till nice and warm and pour over a leaf type lettuce, toss well and enjoy! Guest guest
<<<<where the heck do you live? 100 tomatoes plants..oh my...don't give me exact addy as I may sneak in your garden at night.>>>> HAHAHA, You would not be the only one sneaking into my garden! My neighbor when she cuts though my yard (we are the cut though yard so no one has to walk along the busy, super busy road) always walks into my garden and pick some tomatoes to eat on her walks! LOL, not like she does not have enough of her own in her garden but she has eaten them all by then! LOL, I plant some close to the gate just for her. Yes, I do plant a lot of tomato plants as we do most of our tomato products from scratch. I like knowing what is in my food and how it was handled! I also grow lots of other veggies too and can, freeze and dry them. My dream is to have a root cellar some day. My one garden is about 60 by 60 feet and the second one is about the same footage but more narrow and long. We do plant closely but have not had a problem with that. Plus I do things like plant the cucumber with the peas. Once the peas are done the cucumber climb the fence. Works out great. I need to get some more cabbage plants so I can make kraut. I would like to make a large batch of it to keep fresh and can some too. Guest guest
Just a quick note: Recently I started sprouting again after many years without. Anyway, as I was getting my old supplies out, i found an old package of Sproutpeople seeds.Peasant mix. Thought to try them, and they sprouted! Am eating them now as I wait for my new order to come. Sproutpeople seeds rule!! From: zensibilia <TLongshore@...> Subject: Re: EasyGreen Automatic Sprouter Date: Tuesday, September 16, 2008, 6:09 PM Happy Hen, this is from a reply I posted on September 9 under the " Best sprouter for alfalfa " thread (one thing I didn't mention in that post, which I appreciate very much about the EasyGreen, is the ability to refrigerate sprouts right in the tray they sprouted in...they just pop right in the fridge): I have never seen it mentioned here (though I've only been " around " for a couple of months), but I use the EasyGreen machine, and I could not be more elated with it. I mean thrilled. It is not inexpensive, by any stretch of the imagination, but I consume large quantities of sprouts - - I juice them, mainly - - and it has already paid for itself in just a few months based on what I was paying for them in the store. The machine is virtually (though not totally) self-sufficient, and I have yet to ruin a crop. If you are looking to do large quantities of sprouts at a time, I strongly recommend this automatic sprouter.
