Carol, that happens to me sometimes on a plane. What has helped was during the descent, open my mouth real wide as if to yawn, then, of course, close my mouth. Swallowing helps, too.

Hi all,

Does anyone else have this problem when flying - actually my problem is when the plane is descending. And only one ear. Apparently my one ear doesn't "pop", and it is excruciatingly painful, to say the least. I'd rather have a baby! I've tried chewing gum, I've tried holding my nose and blowing, I've tried "ear planes", and regular ear plugs, and pretty much everything else. Nothing alleviates the pain, I just sit there and cry like a baby. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have to fly to my nephew's wedding in November and I'm dreading it.

Thanks, Carol

I've heard the chewing gum..don't know anyone it worked with.. I've seen yawning work... you keep yawning while ascending or decending. I think it has to do with alot of swallowing to keep the ear tube open...

i've heard of taking a decongestant the nite before flying and using decongestant sprays to open airways.. did some looking and came across this..

When we went to the Bahamas back in the 1970's, I was 23, my ears hurt for the entire three-day vacation.

As a retired flight attendant that saw many a person with a "bad" ear, I can tell you what we used to do................put a HOT, damp cloth in a styrofoam cup. You hold it over your ear with as good a seal as you can get. It seems to relieve the pressure.

Thanks if I ever decide to fly again, I'll try it, I've flown many many times, but our times now are so iffy, I doubt if I will fly again.

I would suggest seeing an Ear, Nose, Throat(ENT) doc and explain what is

going on. Then let the doc do his/her thing. There is a slight

possibility, that you have a blockage of the tube going from your ear to

your throat. Might be some kind of infection too! Eliminating

possibilities, is always good to do. Then once a problem's cause is

identified. I would hope a natural cure is available.

Good Luck,

Bill
