Guest guest
and others, Here is our take on the risperdal. It has been 3 wks now, and I have to say there is a change. Diffinately a change in the fluid out-put. But has not had a BM accident YET. Several wet accidents. Like he is just so into what he is doing he " forgets " or maybe just does not " feel' the need to go eliminate. After the AM dose appx 8am, but 11-11:30 since xmas break, he is falling to sleep:-( but this has not effected his night time routine. Night time is still same routine with less resistance, the down fall, he is waking up appx 4-4:30 am and coming down to our room and crawls into bed with his dad and I then may sleep till around 8. He is staying on task with the change in his routine, he WILL now go on car rides w/o much rejection. And during the ride no head banging!!!!!! He still tells us which way he prefers us to go/turn, but not with as much determination. A Lot more verbal. He has become SOOOO much more independent. So much so, I have to make sure I know what he is doing if he goes into the kitchen. HIS APPETITE HAS GONE WAY UP:-( He is eating 2x's as much as he use to eat. He goes into the kitchen, gets his own bowl out of the cupboard, gets the chip canister, the dip jar from the fridge, and a knife (plastic one) and get his bowl of chips , the then puts the lid back on the canister, the dip jar, and put everything back where it belongs!!!!! He makes sure all are placed 'just right' when he is done. I am sure he has learned these actions from a visual schedule, done a thousand times, but now, he does it on his own. Another little independent activity he is doing, he gets into the fridge gets the gallon jug of spring water out, takes off the lid and drinks right out of the jug!!!!! That one is not a taught behavior. Once he does it and he knows he is busted, he puts the lid back on, and grins ear to ear. It is hard to get mad at him for it. Down side appears to be the sleep disturbance at night and potty accidents. - risperdal/off topic I thought I would share our experience so far. Well it has been a week and half since we started my daughter on risperdal. I think it may be working. Over Thanksgiving break we were having some severe behavioral issues liek banging her head & biting herself. Her mood was just lousy. We have not noticed any of these behaviors during this break. My husband has said that the morning time is the roughest for our daughter until her therapist arrives. Her OCD is in overdrive & she's fussy. We still have these mornings The risperdal is helping with her mood but I still think her OCD behaviors still are where they were at before we started. We only had one mid day breakdown. I usually give her the risperdal about 11am. One day she was fussy & I looked at the time. It was 12:30 & I had forgotten about the medicine. I don't know if one has to do with the other. At first, I didn't think she was going to take the risperdal. I knew the liquid would not be the way to go for her so I asked for the pill form. I crushed the pill in applesauce & she would spit it out at me. So I have discovered the cookie dough works real well. I crush the pill & roll it into cough dough. I hope that this is the right thing for her. I don't like the idea of medicating her but then I cant have her hrting herself either. We have an EEG & MRI scheduled for next week. Guest guest
Donnelle, We haven't noticed any more fluid out-puts. We are still in diapers (my daughter is 4.5yrs old) & we are still going thru about the same... Falling asleep in the daytime ?? Is that right ?? What dosage is your son on -- perhaps the dr can tweek the dosage. We get 1mg once a day. Her appetite is about the same but she is a real good eater. The dr did warn us about the weight can -- possibly up to 10lbs. No change in her sleeping routine -- we take clonidine at night to help with sleeping. She gets up about 1x/night & stays up for awhile but I think thats because she doesn't know how to comfort herself. Like when a baby wakes up & can't get back to sleep. I had also heard that risperdal stimulates langauge -- I am hoping so. It sounds like it doing that in your son. Did your doctor say anything about possible effects on the heart -- the dr said that there was a slight chance about issues with the heart. We are getting an EKG done this week. Then a MRI & EEG to rule out any seizures. risperdal/off topic > > I thought I would share our experience so far. Well it has been a week and > half since we started my daughter on risperdal. Guest guest
My son has been on Risperdal since early November (I think). The pee accidents stopped after a few weeks. He has gained TWENTY POUNDS!! I'm not too happy about that. But our doc may switch him to ziprasidone which is in the same family as Risperdal without the side effect of weight gain. My son is doing great on Risperdal. For how long, who knows. The only negative thing I've seen is that he cries, sometimes for no reason. The mentioned this at school too. He's also on Prozac. Well, still working out the kinks. Neurologist has taken him off of Depakote!!! She says his EEG has been great the last three times, as we've lowered the dosage. I don't know the side effects of taking him off yet, but we'll see. Good luck to you all. Guest guest
Andrienne, Ask your Dr. about Abilify. It is in the same family with less side effects. Less weight gain is one of them. -- Re: risperdal/off topic Date: Mon, 30 Dec 2002 21:07:43 -0500 Donnelle, We haven't noticed any more fluid out-puts. Guest guest
I too have seen success with this med. One BIG drawback is that with the increased eating has come large weight gains oer the last few months. It concearns us alot but I am afraid to pull him off the med since it is the first thing since 13 trials that has helped him. risperdal/off topic > > I thought I would share our experience so far. Guest guest
Hi, Just a quick note on the risperdal.... the excessive eating goes away after a few months. Also, if constipation is a problem, mix mineral oil with nesquick chocolate syrup 1-1 ratio... I usually mix up one cup of each in a glass jar. Mix well and then give one teaspoon-one tablespoon twice a day. Once bowels get regular, go down to once a day. (the tsp or tbsp depends on how big the child is). Breanna had to use this mix for a long time. It tastes just like chocolate syrup, and is the ONLY way I've ever found to get the mineral oil down without a fight. Hope it helps! Guest guest
um, I meant to mix one cup nesquick syrup (must be nesquick, others don't work) with one cup mineral oil and put mixture in a glass jar, sorry for confusion there! jen RE: risperdal/off topic Hi, Just a quick note on the risperdal.... the excessive eating goes away after a few months.
