Guest guest
Only if you get too much zinc, which could occur if you get zinc from multiple sources or just take too many pills. Guest guest
Too much zinc will interfere with the metabolism of other minerals in the body, particularly iron and copper. Too much of one mineral decreases the levels of other minerals/trace elements. Supplementing with ANY isolated nutrient puts your body in an unbalanced state. It's so much better to get your vitamins/minerals from food, and not the isolated (made in China) ingredients. That way, when you eat food, your body knows what to do with the nutrients it gets from that food. Eat sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, peas, beans, chic peas, lentils, cashews, almonds, oatmeal, wheat germ. Some meats also are high in zinc, if you're not a vegetarian. Guest guest
Hi Carol, I agree that getting nutrients from whole food is best. But I wonder why our body "knows what to do" with those nutrients as opposed to the nutrients from an isolated supplement? Why wouldn't to much zinc (or whatever) from whole food unbalance the body just like to much zinc from a supplement? Hmmm. I could be missing the obvious here!!! I do agree with avoiding ingredients manufactured in China though. Happy Spring to one and all! Guest guest
I get my supplements from Swanson's vitamins, http://www.swansonvitamins.com/ they are made here in the US, and as to eating foods I agree, but since there is so little healthy farm land left, I doubt if I can get the right nutrients. Guest guest
Swanson has really really cheap vitamin/mineral pills. You may want to check with them about where the " ingredients " come from. They may be " assembled " in the US, but since 95% of all vitamin/mineral ingredients are sourced from China, I rather doubt they get their ingredients from the US, just judging from their price. They may not even tell you where they get stuff from, or they may tell you they don't know. Guest guest
Is that true with all supplements bought from any manufacturer here? So all or most of my vitamin and mineral supplements are sourced from China, unless they specifically state otherwise? That is a little scary; also some are very expensive to be coming from the same place as the lesser expensive ones. So basically we are just paying for a brand name? Guest guest
I asked them. Have you seen the chart that shows the actual cost of drugs? I'm sure it's the same with Supplements, Swansons gets a large enough mark up just as they are, I know how this works, we do the same in our business. We buy large quantities do seed, repackage them, and sell them cheaper, because we are honest. Guest guest
This article tells about drugs and supplements coming from China - it's from the " Center for Medicine in the Public Interest " . The article is from Nov. 2010. I remember reading a different article a short while ago that said something about 80% to 90% of the ingredients are now coming from China. I'll post that if I find it -- http://www.cmpi.org/in-the-news/in-the-news/drugs-supplements-come-to-u-s-from-c\ hina-largely-unregulated-/ Carol > Is that true with all supplements bought from any manufacturer here? Guest guest
I have seen in the past the large markup of drugs, so I know that's true. I didn't relate it to supplements however. I bought a book by Bill Sardi on the quality of supplements by name brand, and Purity products were at the top of the list. so I bought from them. But now I'm wondering if they are all the same ingredients from overseas and repackaged as well. I'm hoping to get a response from them to answer this question. Sanr I asked them. Guest guest
Hi Cheryl, I think it's because foods are balanced - for instance, if a food has zinc in it, it also has the cofactors that go along with zinc that your body needs to process it. Usually, a zinc supplement is just that - zinc. Isolated nutrients are never found alone in nature. Carol > Hi Carol, I agree that getting nutrients from whole food is best. Guest guest
I have been reading this with interest as my naturopath here in Washington state is on the board for Pure. He is on his way to Africa for a couple weeks but when he returns I will be asking him about their raw ingredients. I can order everything he gives me off the web for more than 1/2 the price he charges me!!! Will let you know. Shari
