Guest guest
Kerri, I wanted to answer this because in our case, we had conflicting points of view. Our ped thought was mild, and CT considered him moderate to severe. I tend to lean with CT because of the fact that my ped dismissed his ear misalignment as an optical illusion. My ped never fully examined or scrutinzed all areas of his head, ears, and facial asymmetry. My ped only gave me a referral after I decided that's the route we were taking. I hope others with a mild condition can answer your question better, but I wanted to let you know that in some gray areas, the diagnosis of mild to moderate may be dictated by whoever is looking at your child and their level of expertise. Our initial consultation with Cranio Tech is June 24. Wish us luck. Thanks again, you guys are wonderful. Kerri ( I AM NOT REALLY SURE OF THE ANSWER TO THIS and I find it absurd that ins will only cover severe cases- argh! We have had many parents that have repositioned with great success- I think if you were vigilant with repositioning and keeping off the affected side you may see some response from that but I am not sure if it would correct itself or not- I guess it depends on the child's head shape time spent on it and what the head wants to do. Maybe one of our experts could comment better on this! beck
Guest guest
Kerri, CT will give you a degree rating (mild, moderate, severe). There is question in my mind whether or not a mild case left completely untreated would correct or not. I think a mild case that is caught fairly early and treated with aggressive repositioning and PT (if there is tort present) can be corrected without banding. This might also hold true for a moderate case IF it is caught early and other treatment options (repositioning, PT, cranial-sacral massage, etc) are pursued aggressively. Severe cases or moderate cases where there is facial assymetry or ear misalignment, I personally believe, will not completely correct on their own without treatment. My daughter was moderate to severe with facial assymetry and ear misalignment so there was really no decision to make for us! We got the helmet as quickly as we could! I hope this answers your question! Keep us posted! Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
