Guest guest
Hi ... those brown things are the husks of the alfalfa seeds.... you won't be able to grow new sprouts from them and seed usually come from a fully grown plant that has reached a particular stage where it produces seed... some one else may give you a better answer but that is basically it From: melodylubart1 <eliz7212@...> Subject: Question about Alfalfa Seeds Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 10:03 PM Being very new to sprouting ANYTHING, I feel I must ask you this stupid question. I have jars of Alfalfa sprouts growing in my kitchen. When I rinse and drain, there are little brown things left over. They look like seeds to me. Here's my question. When my batch of Alfalfa is all done, can I take the remaining brown seed like things that are left over and CAN I REGROW A NEW BATCH FROM THESE SEED LIKE THINGS. Or are these things NOT SEEDS. If I can do this, I don't have to keep buying alfalfa seeds. Or am I wrong here? I really don't know the answer. And where exactly do seeds (any kind of seeds) come from? thanks much. Guest guest
Hi, Melody, is right. What you are seeing is the husks or hull. They are, by the way edible, so you don't have to worry about getting them all washed off. You have probably seen a mature alfalfa plant. They grow a lot of alfalfa around the world for animal feed. ew Question about Alfalfa Seeds Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 10:03 PM Being very new to sprouting ANYTHING, I feel I must ask you this stupid question. Guest guest
They might not all be husks, there is a certain percentage of seeds that are not going to germinate (sprout). If the seeds don't sprout they are dead. It is usually around 10%, but old or bad quality seed will have a much lower germination rate. It is best to purchase the best quality organic seed. It will be cheaper in the long run because the seed will go further. When you ask where do seeds come from are you speaking in terms of growers or distributors or something else? And concerning tofu, you should check Dr. Mercola's website for information about that. Guest guest
Ah, they are husks or hulls. Thanks so much for this information. And I understand now that seeds come from mature plants, right? Can't wait to sprout lots of other stuff. I will check Dr. Mercola's website (about the Tofu). I don't think once a week (eating a bit of Tofu I mean), could harm me. but I'll check it out. Thanks to you all. Melody
