Guest guest
Kate, CT is not the only place that makes bands although they are the only ones that make the DOCband. Check out www.orthomerica.com to see if there are STARband makers in your area. We do have a number of Canadian members so maybe one of them is in your area and can help with specifics. Guest guest
Hi Kate I live in Calgary,Alberta and the children's hospital does the DOCband. I do know that they have parents that do travel far to receive treatment. I am sorry i don't know of any in Ontario but maybe you could get in touch with the childrens hospital here in calgary and maybe they could give you some information. The telephone number for the Orthotic department is 403-229-7957. Take care and keep us posted. P.S my son Dylan is in the DOCband. Guest guest
Hi Kate! There are a couple of options in Ontario. One is the Sick Kids hospital in Toronto (I believe they have a website where you can find the number/physician's names), and the second is in Ottawa (1-613-737-7350 ext. 5314). The Toronto helmet is a locally made, passive type of helmet. We have had a few recent members here who have used it, so hopefully they will respond with their experiences. The Ottawa helmet is (I believe!!) a STARband, and if not, is a locally made one, but is very similar to the STARband or DOCband (I know it's not a DOCband, but it is of the "active" variety). We had a member many moons ago who used this band, but I haven't heard of anyone using it since. Not that people aren't using it, they just don't show up here! ;o) Or, maybe they are no longer using it at that clinic???? If you happen to call there, please let us know if they're still in business! ) THANX! Other than that, you do have the option of finding your way to Alberta to use either the Calgary or Edmonton facilities for the DOCband. You may want to check with your insurance coverage before hand, as some will cover the out of province treatment, but some wont. Also keep in mind that there will be A LOT of travel involved (up to a trip/week if your child is under 7 months of age) if you go with the DOCband. If you have family in Alberta that you can stay with, it will make life a lot easier! I hope I've been of SOME help, and I'm sure others will respond to you soon. Good luck! Kendra in Calgary (Mom to Hanna, DOCband graduate since September 2000!!!) -- What happens if...? Ontario members? What happens if the closest CT clinic is about a 72 hour drive away? I am planning ahead for our visit in 4 weeks so if Paige hasn't shown any improvement I can ask about helmet therapy. I don't have a clue if the pediatrician will be resistant to the idea or not... like I said I'm planning ahead. Are there any plagio families from Ontario Canada on board? Have any of you started helmet/band therapy? KateFor more plagio info
