HELP! I got my son's helmet from Hanger Orthotics in Long ISland b/c that's where I live and I'm not sure if it's doing anything??? If anyone uses Hanger and has any feedback I would appreciate you e-mailing me at multiag@.... I don't know any parents personally who are going through this so I can use all the advice that's out there. Anastasia

Hi Anastasia and welcome. Can you tell us a bit more about your situation? How

old is your child? How long has he been wearing it? What gives you the

impression that it is not working? Are you just not seeing correction or do you

feel it is not fitting properly? Did you take " before " photos and if so how do

they compare to his current head shape?

If you have serious concerns about the effectiveness of the helmet then a second

opinion is in order. There is a CT clinic in NJ that you might be able to go to

get a second opinion.

If you could give us a bit more info we would be better able to assist you.

Welcome to the group and I look forward to hearing more of your story.

marcisch@... wrote: Hi Marci. Thanks for responding. I didn't think I was doing the thing correctly. My son was diagnosed a few weeks ago at his three month check-up. My pediatrician sent us for skull x-rays and to a Neurosurgeon at NYU medical center here in NY. The Neuro confirmed the diagnoses and we went ahead with the casting as per the doctor's recommendation. Maybe it's because I've heard horror stories of wasting time thinking their helmets were working when, in fact, they were not. Or maybe it's that I heard via the internet that CT and the Doc band were so highly recommended that I am nervous that I didn't make the right choice. I thought that I should have seen some marks on his head after he wears it. It is only the third day he has been wearing it. I just don't want to waste time.

It sounds like your son is using a passive helmet. My daughter wore a passive

helmet as well. You will not see the red marks and spots with a passive

helmet until your son has " grown into " it a bit more. The passive helmets do

not work the same as the active bands in that they don't apply direct

pressure at all times. It is more common to get the red spots and marks right

away with the bands because they are applying pressure from the beginning.

Three months is a good age to use a passive helmet. My daughter didn't get

hers until she was 9 months and we still got pretty good correction with the

helmet. While there is no denying that CT makes an outstanding product, there

are lots of other good products out there. It is important to screen your

ortho thoroughly. Ask how many babies they have treated and how many they

have treated successfully. Ask them to show you before and after pictures.

Ask if they have any written testimonials or have any references that you

could call. If they do not seem to have solid experience and a good success

rate then a second opinion might be necessary.

Be sure to take lots of pictures of his head now so you have something to

compare his head shape to in the weeks and months to come. At such a very

young age you can still change to something different a couple of months down

the road if you are not satisfied with the progress.

Best of luck to you and I hope that you will keep us posted on progress.

Anastasia,

I would post a message to the group with the header " Hanger Orthotics " to see

if any members are also using them, and you can compare notes better with

someone that may be further down the road than you are. Your right, you

don't want to waste precious time, so depending on the age, I would give it

at least a month to figure out if you feel this is not working. Start taking

pictures and talking in detail with the ortho about what's supposed to be

happening. If this is a passive band, the results may be a bit slower.

Were you able to see any before and after pics of past patients? Really keep

on top of it- we have had a few members that their children did not benefit

from some bands, depending on the experience or lack thereof from the

orthotist- so if you feel they are not giving you correct information and

nothing is changing, start doing more homework now to figure out what's going

on and then when you have given it ample time to prove itself (or not),

you'll have a better feel of what course of action you should take. Good

luck and keep us posted!

How do I go about finding other parents in my area?

you can look in the database or post with your area in the subject header requesting a response or you could call hanger and ask them for some references-

Thanks so much . Great advice! I am just a bit nervous and want the best for my child, just as everyone else. How do I go about finding other parents in my area?

Anastasia,

If you would post a message that has a subject line like: " Anyone from

_______ area? " you might get some responses from people in your area. With

everyone being so busy not all members read every post. However, if you post

with a descriptive subject line of where you are there is a better chance of

getting a response.

No doubt your nervous- this is new territory and you only want to help your child- a very good mommy trait! I know that Marci emailed you a great post on how to get that header to read "Hanger Orthotics"- so I hope that when you post this it will reach someone (I swear someone just posted about Hanger) and they can share their experiences with you. Good luck!
