Guest guest
Hi & welcome to our group! We're glad you have found us.......all the symptoms you mentioned definitely sound like plagio. Repositioning does work for some, but doesn't work for others. My daughter's plagio was severe, so repositioning did not help her plagio. I definitely recommend repositioning for your daughter. If her case is mild, then you could see good improvement with repositioning alone. Check out www.plagiocephaly.org/support for some helpful repositioning tips. If you are not comfortable with your pediatrician's laid back attitude, then I would seek another opinion. Perhaps your pediatrician would refer you to a specialist (pediatric neurosurgoen). A lot of our plagio babies were referred to a speciliast from our ped. for an evaluation, my daughter was. I would suggest calling your ped's office & explain your concerns, and ask to be referred to a specialist. If your ped. will not authorize it, then switch. Good luck with all of this. You are being a terrific mom! Please let us know what your ped. tells you & keep us updated on your repositioning efforts. Guest guest
debbie, thank you for your thoughts and kind support! i will let you know how things go. i think i will try repositioning on my own for 4 weeks and if i don't think lucy's plagio is improving will insist on a consult with a specialist. in that vein, i propped her right shoulder last night in order to make her sleep with her head turned to the left (she ALWAYS sleeps with it turned to the right), and that worked out pretty well. i intend to do the same thing in her car seat, using a folded receiving blanket. have you tried this? i see that there are some props that i can purchase to this end...but i imagine a blanket would work equally well, no? it looks as though your daughter is out of her doc band...congrats! did you find that it worked as you had hoped? again, thank you for your support! jen and lucy > > hi, > > > > i recently noticed that my daughter, who is 6 months old, has VERY > > asymmetrical eyes. one appears much rounder and larger than the > > other. i took her to the pediatrician today. the ped said that > her > > head shape is " a little bit flat, but her ears are even " (when > viewed > > from the top). the ped also noticed that there was a " slight " > bulge > > in my child's forehead. overall, though, she told me that i have > > nothing to worry about and that there was no need to look further > at > > this problem. > > > > i disagree with the doctor and am not convinced that i should > simply > > ignore this problem when it might get worse. i will try > > repositioning techniques on my own, however, does anyone know of > the > > effectiveness of this? do you think i should see another > > pediatrician or am i being overly reactionary? does very mild > plagio > > generally self correct? if my daughter had plagio would it be more > > obvious than it is? > > > > any thoughts, info, input would be WELCOMED. > > > > thank you. > > > > jennifer in san francisco
Guest guest
: You are more than welcome! Here's a link with some other helpful repositioning products: Plagiocephaly/links/Repositioning_001021 174219/ If this link doesn't work it is in our " bookmarks " section, then " repositioning ideas " . I know what you are saying about your daughter sleeping on her right ONLY! My daughter did the same thing, there was nothing I could do to keep her off her flat side. My daughter graduated from her DOCband almost one year ago today....6/22/01. Abby began her DOCband older at 11.5 mos of age, wore one band for 4.5 mos with 50-60% correction which we are thrilled with. I cannot believe she's been out of it for a year now. Time sure does fly. Guest guest
Hi - It definetly sounds like your daughter has plagio to some degree. My son Ian has severe plagio but exhibits all of the symptons that you described. I noticed that you live in the S.F. area we are in Sacramento but we go to Palo Alto for our STARband treatment every couple of weeks. The place we go is Center for Independent Rehabilitative Services and the phone i 650-237-9217 I am wondering if they will give you and evaluation of your daughter and let you know if she needs treatment. They are wonderful people and so helpful, we have been very impressed with the care we have received. I would definetely get a second opinion, the sooner the better baby's heads grow very fast at this early age. Good luck and keep us posted with what happens -Ian & > hi, > > i recently noticed that my daughter, who is 6 months old, has VERY > asymmetrical eyes. one appears much rounder and larger than the > other. i took her to the pediatrician today. the ped said that her > head shape is " a little bit flat, but her ears are even " (when viewed > from the top). the ped also noticed that there was a " slight " bulge > in my child's forehead. overall, though, she told me that i have > nothing to worry about and that there was no need to look further at > this problem. > > i disagree with the doctor and am not convinced that i should simply > ignore this problem when it might get worse. i will try > repositioning techniques on my own, however, does anyone know of the > effectiveness of this? do you think i should see another > pediatrician or am i being overly reactionary? does very mild plagio > generally self correct? if my daughter had plagio would it be more > obvious than it is? > > any thoughts, info, input would be WELCOMED. > > thank you. > > jennifer in san francisco
Guest guest
debbie, lucy is my first, is abby yours? i never dreamed i could care so much and feel so tuned in to another person...it's awesome (in both the good and bad ways that one can use that word). interestingly (to me, anyway), i might never have noticed the asymmetry in lucy's eyes if i did not have asymmetrical eyes myself! i had very minor surgery on a tear duct in my top lid about ten years ago, and it left me with some scar tissue that causes my left eyelid to look bigger than my right. no one seems to notice it unless i point it out but it used to make me feel very self conscious. i don't want that for lucy. did a doc point out abby's plagio or did you notice it? jen > > > > hi, > > > > > > > > i recently noticed that my daughter, who is 6 months old, has > > VERY > > > > asymmetrical eyes. one appears much rounder and larger than > the > > > > other. i took her to the pediatrician today. the ped said > that > > > her > > > > head shape is " a little bit flat, but her ears are even " (when > > > viewed > > > > from the top). the ped also noticed that there was a " slight " > > > bulge > > > > in my child's forehead. overall, though, she told me that i > have > > > > nothing to worry about and that there was no need to look > further > > > at > > > > this problem. > > > > > > > > i disagree with the doctor and am not convinced that i should > > > simply > > > > ignore this problem when it might get worse. i will try > > > > repositioning techniques on my own, however, does anyone know > of > > > the > > > > effectiveness of this? do you think i should see another > > > > pediatrician or am i being overly reactionary? does very mild > > > plagio > > > > generally self correct? if my daughter had plagio would it be > > more > > > > obvious than it is? > > > > > > > > any thoughts, info, input would be WELCOMED. > > > > > > > > thank you. > > > > > > > > jennifer in san francisco
Guest guest
megan, THANK YOU for the information...that is exactly what i was looking for. i will call these folks tomorrow. tell me, did you notice ian's plagio before the doc did, or was it not diagnosed until it was severe? is the STARband helping? jen > > hi, > > > > i recently noticed that my daughter, who is 6 months old, has VERY > > asymmetrical eyes. one appears much rounder and larger than the > > other. i took her to the pediatrician today. the ped said that > her > > head shape is " a little bit flat, but her ears are even " (when > viewed > > from the top). the ped also noticed that there was a " slight " > bulge > > in my child's forehead. overall, though, she told me that i have > > nothing to worry about and that there was no need to look further > at > > this problem. > > > > i disagree with the doctor and am not convinced that i should > simply > > ignore this problem when it might get worse. i will try > > repositioning techniques on my own, however, does anyone know of > the > > effectiveness of this? do you think i should see another > > pediatrician or am i being overly reactionary? does very mild > plagio > > generally self correct? if my daughter had plagio would it be more > > obvious than it is? > > > > any thoughts, info, input would be WELCOMED. > > > > thank you. > > > > jennifer in san francisco
Guest guest
Hi - Sorry it's taken me so long to respond but we have been out of town for a long weekend. First time with the twins. So anyway on to business, we noticed Ian's head at 2 months was very flat so we mentioned it to his peditrician who said will watch it and revaluate at 4 months. At the 4 month checkup he referred us to a nuerosurgeon who did xrays that day and told us he had severe plagio. Within two weeks we had a appt for his helmet and the insurance covered it with no problems what so ever. The STARband is helping, he has hd it on a little over a month and they have already seen about a 20% change. He has a series of problems we are working on that have come with the plagio so we still have many months to go, but are convinced the helmet is doing alot of good for him. If the helmet doesn't work our nuerosurgeon would like to do the surgery on him to correct it, because later in life it could lead to many other problems such as jaw problems, eye alignment, and of course head shape. He is not a beliver in the " It's just cosmetic " excuse. Of course he is beautiful as a baby but it is later in life that he is conerned about. The band is truly harder on the parents than on the child, and I wasn't convinced of that until now. He is very happy in it and doesn't mind it one bit. We are even starting to get use to it. I can't wait to hear what you found out from your phone call. Go with your gut feeling. Keep us posted -Ian > > > hi, > > > > > > i recently noticed that my daughter, who is 6 months old, has > VERY > > > asymmetrical eyes. one appears much rounder and larger than the > > > other. i took her to the pediatrician today. the ped said that > > her > > > head shape is " a little bit flat, but her ears are even " (when > > viewed > > > from the top). the ped also noticed that there was a " slight " > > bulge > > > in my child's forehead. overall, though, she told me that i have > > > nothing to worry about and that there was no need to look further > > at > > > this problem. > > > > > > i disagree with the doctor and am not convinced that i should > > simply > > > ignore this problem when it might get worse. i will try > > > repositioning techniques on my own, however, does anyone know of > > the > > > effectiveness of this? do you think i should see another > > > pediatrician or am i being overly reactionary? does very mild > > plagio > > > generally self correct? if my daughter had plagio would it be > more > > > obvious than it is? > > > > > > any thoughts, info, input would be WELCOMED. > > > > > > thank you. > > > > > > jennifer in san francisco
Guest guest
Hi , We went to the CIRS at Palo Alto also. We live in San . The phone of the CIRS we went to is 650-462-0102 however. Could you please let us know the address of your CIRS and the name of your orthosist? I don't think our orthosist has many experiences. Thanks a lot.
