Guest guest
Kerri: I see you have already rec'd a very good reply to your question. Cranial Technologies are the providers of the DOCband. As replied to you already, they require an RX from a dr. before they can band your child. Ortho that we talk about usually means " orthotists " - orthotists are those who treat our children with the helmet or band. The people at Cranial Technologies are orthotists and physical therapists (I think pt's too, I always get so confused!). There are usually 3 different types of specialists that many of our children are referred to before getting our child the band. Click on this link for the 3 types of specialists: http://www.plagiocephaly.org/support/questions.htm My daugher was referred to a pediatric neurosurgeon, this is who evaluated her to rule out craniosynostosis and who wrote the rx for her bands. I'm sorry, I'm SO not medically smart! I probably confused you even more! Debbie Abby' smom DOCGrad MI > Our pediatrician referred us to Cranial Technologies. Guest guest
Just to add my two cents worth since I took to a neurosurgeon and a craniofacial plastic surgeon: Our neurosurgeon ruled out craniosynostosis. He looked at correction of 's plagiocephaly from a surgical viewpoint. He felt possibly wouldn't have any functional impairments if left untreated, and stated was not a surgical candidate. He told me to grow 's hair longer to cover his misaligned ears and come back in 6 months. He also was completely against banding, stating it was psychologically damaging, costly, and " anything that puts pressure on one part of the head to get another to pop out went against a grain of neurosurgery " . This is a very well respected neurosurgeon I might add. He was just not knowledgeable about banding and thus frowned upon it. I then went to a craniofacial plastic surgeon I located through Cappskids.org. He looks at things from an aesthetic perspective and how to fix things non-surgically and was very well-informed on banding. He prescribed the DOCband. He provided me with a lot of documentation proving its effectiveness. He has always done a lot of post-med school education regarding plagiocephaly. I think whomever you decide to go to, you, as a parent, need to make the decision on whether you are happy with the physician and his opinion. If not, seek another. I know I am happy I did.
