Marci,

Our ortho thought Cole would receive very good correction, and

estimated that he would wear the helmet for 5-6 months. At the

Ortho's urging, I called Orthomerica and asked about him. I got

glowing reports about him and his wealth of experience, which did

make me feel better. I suppose I wasn't too reassured by the ortho's

assurances that Cole would receive good correction... afterall, I

hardly expected him to say " I can't do anything for him, so you may

as well give up now. " But talking to Bill at Orthomerica was

reassuring. There was also a mom and baby in the waiting room when

we went to get cast for the helmet, and I got to talk to her. Her

son had severe plagio and had been in the helmet 2 months (starting

at 10 months of age). She said that she had seen lots of

improvement, and reassured me that we wouldn't regret our decision to

go ahead with it one bit (she was still fighting her insurance too).

I'm just so anxious to get on with this process. It looks like we

won't get the helmet until Tuesday or Wednesday (I was hoping it

might arrive by Friday!).

I also read an earlier post from someone who said they didn't want

their little one to be learning to crawl/walk in the helmet so had

hoped to get it earlier. The mom in the waiting room said the helmet

is great for learning to walk... it's like a crash helmet for those

early falls. I'm most worried about the heat (high of 98 today, and

it looks like this summer is shaping up to be hazy, hot, and humid).

Thanks to those who have sent words of encouragement. This group has

been helpful already... just knowing others are going thru something

similar. And I just found out that an acquaintance in my town (a

friend of a friend) who has a son 2 weeks younger than Cole is going

to see a neurosurgeon today. He will most likely be getting a helmet

soon, and I plan to let her know about the group.

Hi Kia,

I'm glad that your ortho got such glowing praise from Orthomerica - that's

pretty reassuring!

I'm sorry that you are still having to wait. got her helmet at the

exact same time that she was really taking off with the walking (9 months).

It was no hinderance to her at all, in fact, I agree with the others that it

actually helped! It was exactly like a crash helmet! I cannot even begin to

tell you how many head bangs it saved her from. When she was finished with

her helmet she would bump her head and get SO mad at me like " how could you

let this happen " . It took about a week for her to realize that she had to

duck or move to the side instead of running into things head first!!

I hope your band comes in very soon. Let us know when you have it!
