Guest guest
Kathy, I think that at Kayla's age, you should get very good correction going on. Sometimes the extra wait is just that, extra wait and worry. Good luck and way to go! So glad that all of the great advice from this Board helped- it helped me too and its so good to have friends that know where your coming from and what the heck your talking about! (playgio who?) Let us know when you get the helmet how the adjustment period is going, for her and you and Dad! ' Mom
Guest guest
Beck and company, We had our appointment today and University of Michigan. We met with a nurse practitioner who diagnosed Kayla with moderate plagiocephaly. Since Kayla is 4 1/2 months she said we could make our decision now or wait a couple of months and decide then. My husband and I talked about it and decided to get the helmet. My husbands reasoning was he could hear Kayla at 15 yelling at us for not taking care of it when she was young : ) We were casted right away. The process at U of M was very easy on Kayla, her eyes were not covered. Her helmet should be ready in 7-10 days. Now for the problem, our insurance MCare used to cover the helmets but recently they have not been. Having been a part of this group and hearing all of the wonderful advice we knew how to handle this situation. We asked the Dr. if she considered this a medical necessity for Kayla. She said yes and we requested a letter on the spot. She also mentioned that MCare and UofM are discussing the coverage of the helmets since they were covered in the past. We should have our recommendation letter by Tuesday. Probably the same timeframe we receive out MCare denial letter. I spoke with Helen who is part of this group and is currently fighting MCare so I expected all of this. I also spoke to our MCare Customer Service Rep and he assured me that as long as it is deemed medically necessary it should be covered. I am ready for the battle and feel confident I will win. Hopefully, Helen already has. I can't thank everyone hear enough. If it wasn't for listening to all of you and your great advice I do not know what we would have decided. I can also say that I was calm through the whole process. Again, I have to thank all of you for that. Everyone here did a great job preparing us for what to expect. I will continue to keep you posted as to our progress. P.S. - I'll work on getting some of Kayla's pics added to the web site : ) Kathy and Kayla kathy/kayla Good luck at your appointment tomorrow let us know how it goes!beckFor more plagio info
Guest guest
Wow Kathy: I sure was surprised to read Kayla was already casted! But that's great, she'll be on her way to a rounder head in NO time now. I am sure you're repositioning helped her head a lot already, you should be proud of all the work & effort you put into repositioning her! The hard part, the casting, is now over & done with. I hope Mcare will wake up & start covering helmets again. Did anyone tell you why they stopped? The U of M helmet is a passive design right? With Kayla's younger age, she should get great results with it. Thank you SO much for the update. Please let us know when her helmet is in & how it all goes. Guest guest
Kathy, So glad to read your post. Sounds like everything went as well as can be expected and you'll have Kayla's new hat in no time! It also sounds like you are armed and prepared for the insurance co. Getting the letter of medical necessity right away will certainly help. Best of luck with that. Let us know when the helmet is in and keep us posted on the insurance thing! Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
