Barbara,

Actually, that's one of the key reasons I liked the DOC band, for its lightweight (I think 5 grams), and the pressure points will hold areas that are round, so that the flat areas can grow and round too. In my opinion it really doesn't take much to hold the points needed, so thick foam is just excess and thinner seems more comfortable and less cumbersome. My son only needed one band, and he was fitted once a week, they shaved the foam all the way to almost the plastic. As Debbie said, it really depends on the growth time in the band, and how much further correction needs to be made. If your child has had so many growth spurts that there is nothing left to shave, but yet, still could use more correction, a second band will be introduced as it should be. I would not put too much stock into what these companies are telling you to pit you against another company. Your best bet is to do your own independent research, ask parents and both reps of each product tons of questions that have experience with both, and gauge your decision on the facts that have presented themself. This board has many members that have used both the STARband, the DOC band and locally made helmets, each with their own stories of success, failure, or problems respectively. It's really up to you to decide what you feel is the best choice for your child, given all the variables (success rate, cost, location, etc). Good luck and keep us posted when you decide!
