Guest guest
It was the occipital headache that feels like an axe stuck in there, hand tremor, heart dysrhythmia, left chest pain, painful joints, a few hives. Some nausea. This scares doctors - seems like allergy. So the endo I was with at the time stopped it altogether, saying it was a " no-no. " It may have been at 25mg then (2004). In 2005 I met the current doc gave me spiro which took my pressure down and K up almost overnight - no one for 15 years ever mentioned it, including the surgeon and diagnosing Nephrologist who did my adrenalectomy. When that didn't work they put me back on the usual cocktail of ACE, BB CCB, etc. Which also did not work. They added ameloride, which nearly killed me. Had to be defibrillated twice, and a morphine injection directly into the left ventricle. Ho-hum, another day in the life of a PA patient. =-O dave val1198 wrote: > > Dave, what side effects caused you to give up the first time? I'm > having significant nausea. > > > > > > Same w/me. Guest guest
I took 12.5 mg tonight right after dinner and had less nausea. No, never on spiro. This is my first trial of an aldo blocker. I have been on HCTZ since '02 and then Triam/HCTZ since 12/07. You really think chiropractors are that dangerous? My muscles get so cramped up that I am in agony. Maybe getting K up will help. Val From: hyperaldosteronism [mailto:hyperaldosteronism ] On Behalf Of Clarence Grim I would try taking it with meals and see if that helps or makes nausea worse. If your BP has gone up this is the most likely cause of headaches. If you feel puffy and have gained wt then you are eating too much salt that is not yet blocked by Insprsa does. I dont recall if you had been on spiro before this and are changing to Inspra. I am not sure what the chiropractor will add but can't hurt unless he tears your carotid artery during adjustment. Guest guest
Val, as I tapered up the inspra I kept my longstanding 37mg spiro onboard until I reached 37mg inspra, then took away 12.5 spiro, etc in three more increments. Target dose of inspra : 75mg, twice the spiro that worked. There were some inspra headaches and nausea, etc, during increment one, but I stuck with it and sure enough my body adapted. Once I had reached 25mg, no more problems. From the stories I have seen in here adaptation is a little slower than new inspra users would like, but worth toughing it out. Our bodies are shocked by all these 'chemical wonders' at first. dave Valarie wrote: > > I'm having that but its not new for me. Guest guest
! If you have PA, and use diazide/thiazide (HCTZ, train, etc) it is a wonder you have only nausea and headache. That's mild toxicity for PA. I was stage 4 PA and those nearly killed me with my K levels and LVH - literally. Muscle cramping is the signpost of low K HCTZ use. Those diuretics are like poison to PA pts I have known. The upshot is they do little if anything for BP & K. So why bump yourself off? So lazy docs can follow their sheets? With my advanced PA I wouldn't go anywhere near those drugs - ever. The cartoid is susceptible to " subluxation " I would surmise. Has anyone heard of a case where it happened? Minus your PA-poison (HCTZ/triam) who knows? - all your cramping, nausea, headache, etc might disappear overnight like they did for me. Understand doctors have those diuretics listed as 'first line' on their practicums. If they don't know about PA (which is almost always) they'll keep cramming it down your throat on grounds that patients are nutty and imagine side efx. Doctors are DSM-IV happy without a psych license. I have one, and shudder at them for the utter lack of data they base these self-aggrandizing diagnoses of psychological problems upon. Lazy, lazy, lazy. They are wrong w/PA and diazides/thiazides in my experience. Flat wrong. Guest guest
Oh, I know all that, Dave. At my request, I changed from plain HCTZ to " a potassium-sparing diuretic " when I went to the ER in Dec. It has taken me this long to get to the endo and get on Inspra. My regular doc wouldn't change me off the diazide and I was afraid to stop it by myself. The sick thing is, for the last nearly six years, I've had several bouts of low K, high BP, etc (story is in the files). The first time, in 2002, I was re-started on HCTZ and not one doc ever said anything about HCTZ being a problem. One night in 2004, I went to the ER with heart flopping all over the place, unable to take deep breaths, anxiety, swelling, hypertension, etc. I was sent home with 100 mEq K and not one mention of stopping the HCTZ. I had a full workup with a University of Colorado Medical School endo in 2005. Not one mention of changing HCTZ - just pushed anti-depressants and metformin. I showed her my FitDay record of what I ate. She didn't give a damn. In passing, she said, " Hmm, something is really out of balance. " I took my dad to CU Med Center in 1972 and he was treated worse than we treat our dogs. I should have known better than to go there. I didn't know anything until I started learning here on this board. What the hell? I studied economics, not medicine! Aren't those who studied medicine supposed to know medicine? Maybe I just lucked out and picked docs from the lower half of their classes. I had a one-in-two chance of doing that. I just ordered Hall and Guyton's book. For ten years, I had an income tax practice. It was a nice source of income and helped educate my children. I could work it from home and not leave my children in daycare. I sold it when I got desperately ill (diagnosed ankylosing spondylitis but was really hypothyroidism + hyperparathyroidism). Ankylosing spondylitis, BTW, is a pretty serious life sentence. I cannot tell you how many lazy and ignorant CPAs' returns I amended for people. I got them literally thousands of dollars in refunds. I've always told my children that the best investment they can make is a good knowledge of the tax law. Now, I must teach them that I have been wrong. The best investment they can make is to study medicine in the evenings. I'm pretty damn angry (which must mean I might be feeling better this morning). Now I'm sweating (and have been since 2 a.m.). Took 12.5 mg Inspra with V-8 + an OTC anti-nausea med and am not nauseous yet. Yay! Val From: hyperaldosteronism [mailto:hyperaldosteronism ] On Behalf Of Dave ! Guest guest
Oh, absolutely! I am literally terrified of salt. Called my endo yesterday and requested she phone in some spiro. No return call. Faxed my endo today and requested she phone in some spiro. Told her I'm very concerned about rising BP and anxiety. No RX at the pharmacy and its 6:30 p.m. I saw her on March 6. It took two calls to get a call back from her. She had to study Inspra having never used it. Took eight days to get the Inspra. So now, I'm off triam/HCTZ, on only 12.5 mg Inspra, and BP is rising. More Inspra makes me too sick. I'm thoroughly disgusted. Wondering what will be first - a stroke or a prescription for spiro? Val From: hyperaldosteronism [mailto:hyperaldosteronism ] On Behalf Of Clarence Grim Trust it is low sodium V8??

Guest guest
I'm taking 1/2 at a time (12.5 mg), with food. Still making me sick but not as sick as when started. I believe that sooner or later, I would be able to adjust but I'm afraid it will take so long to get the dose up to a level where we can see if it is going to work. I want to get this BP down. I may be up about 15 points since dropping the diazide last Friday. If I don't hear tomorrow, I'm going to find an online place to get it. In fact, if she doesn't call tomorrow, I'm going to cast an anxiety spell on her and let her walk in my shoes for a week or so. I've been thinking and doing lots of research on thyroid stuff. Probably, you'll all think I'm nuts. Today, I didn't take my Synthroid. I believe the racing is lessened tonight. I'm going to stay off it for a few days and then go back at a lower dose. I am not hyper (TSH = 1.91) but I feel hyper (sweats, etc.). I got some thyroid antibody tests done. While the Synthroid has totally extinguished the Hashimoto's (hypo) antibodies, my Grave's (hyper) antibodies are pretty high. I find that interesting. And, while my T3 is very low, my rT3 (reverse T3) is very high. My body is converting to rT3 (inactive hormone) instead of to T3 (active hormone). That's not what its supposed to do and that may explain my weight problem. This is all interesting to me but I'm not sure where to go with it. I've read some stuff about rT3 being high as a result of some other bodily disease process. PA??? I have found four bright online friends who are going through much of the same thing. The one thing we all have in common is high TSI antibodies and high rT3. None are overtly hyperthyroid. In fact, they are hypo to some degree. I am the only one of them with a BP & low K problem. I know this isn't a thyroid list, but for me, there is some interaction of T3, aldo, K, and, of course, BP. Taking some T3 is what set off the current episode back in September. Prior to that, my BP was hanging on by its fingernails, at least since the last episode lessened. I ordered the Guyton book. I swear, I'm going to figure this all out. If I wear you all out, must delete me 'cause I'll never know. Val From: hyperaldosteronism [mailto:hyperaldosteronism ] On Behalf Of Clarence Grim Did you try taking Inspra with meals? Just a reminder that Dyazide works by riding the body of salt. So you need to look carefully to see where the sodium is coming from. Read every label on anything you eat and work on getting less than 1500 mg a day. > > In fact, if she doesn't call tomorrow, I'm going to cast an anxiety > spell on > her and let her walk in my shoes for a week or so. > > I've been thinking and doing lots of research on thyroid stuff. > Probably, > you'll all think I'm nuts. None of the other docs or researchers could find ay basis for this except theoretical worry. A cardio or nephro will call it in, probably Valarie wrote: > > Oh, absolutely! Guest guest
When more salt enters the urine in the presence of excess aldo the MC reabsorbs the Na and to keep electrical neutrality K is secreted into the urine. As diuretics put more Na in distal tubule there is more K loss. Unless of course Na intake is very low. Say 1500 mg a day. increasing oral K to 4000/ day helps as well. AKA DASH. Guest guest
I guess that review flew past me during an anxiety period. It bothers me to miss things. Where might I find it? My aldo is not low, but not sky-high either. Val From: hyperaldosteronism [mailto:hyperaldosteronism ] On Behalf Of Clarence Grim As I mention in my review article hypothroidism can cause and aldo like problem but aldo is low. Guest guest
I would be very interested. Comcast limits me to 5 mb. Is it smaller than that or might zipping it make it smaller? Guest guest
20 MB will use up about 20% of the allotted space on . We're using 13% of 100 MB right now on bloodpressureline. Regards Re: Inspra Apparantly not on my current computer. Will need to track it down. I am sure it is about 20 MB. On Mar 19, 2008, at 4:57 PM, Valarie wrote: > I would be very interested. Guest guest
I am interested in knowing how anyone out there is tolerating Inspra. I was recently put on it (50 mg/day) and taken off of Aldactone. I was experiencing some nasty side effects from the Aldactone. Now, with the Inspra I have gotten extremelly depressed and my pressure has gone up. I'm tempted to go back on the Aldactone. Any thoughts?
Guest guest
Hi Mike I take Inspra and have for about 3 years now. I increased gradually to 225 mg a day or 75 mg three times a day. It is easier on my system to take less more often. In January my BP was rising a little and I bumped the dosage to 300 mg a day. I take nothing else. I DASH and nothing else. ( I do use an albuterol inhaler occasionally). I still get out of balance at times but I think I tolerate the Inspra very well. I really notice no side effects from it. Most of any effects I have are due to not DASHing properly or a change in activity or an illness like a cold or sinus. The major effects are headache and muscle aches and cramps and totally being tired. I hope I am not the exception but I seem to handle Inspra very well. The spiro for the first year was hell for me but that was in the beginning. Good luck, Randy <><May we all be DASHing!!!><> Proverbs 26:11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly. ---------------------------------------- From: " constellationmike " <hohnka@...> Sent: Tuesday, May 06, 2008 6:48 AM hyperaldosteronism Subject: Inspra I am interested in knowing how anyone out there is tolerating Inspra.
