Guest guest
Hi, My name is Marilyn and I am so glad I found this group. My son Hayden is 6 1/2 months old and fits the decription of positional plagiocephaly. My retiring doctor was not concerned months ago when I brought it to his attention. But my new doctor made a referal to a neurosurgeon. I am scared, but releived that there is a way to fix it. Any suggestions, or advise I need to know before going would be great? I do have one concern? Does insurance usually cover this, or is it considered cosmetic. Sincerely, Haydens Mom- Marilyn North Carolina
Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, Welcome to the group! I'm glad your new doctor was willing to make the referral. Hayden is still at a very good age to get great correction with a band or helmet. I was SO apprehensive the days and weeks leading up to the appointment with the specialist, but just like you I was relieved to know that I would be able to do something about it that would not require surgery. Now that has been out of her helmet for about a year I am so thankful that we did it and I would do it all over again if I had to. As far as insurance goes - it really varies. Some specialists do not consider plagio cosmetic - my specialist wrote two great letters regarding the medical necessity of the helmet. We had to fight for about 6 months, but ultimately the insurance co did pay. If the specialist has the mindset that it is cosmetic it is more difficult to get approved, but not impossible. Hopefully your insurance company will be the kind that pays for helmets/bands without forcing appeal after appeal. Best of wishes and let us know how things go.
