Hello Heidi -

Welcome to the group! I'm sorry your doctor didn't explain things to you. The

casting process is not very pleasant, but it is very quick and some babies

handle it quite well. Every place handles the casting slightly differently,

but your baby will probably have to have plaster strips put all over her

head, the strips will harden slightly and the plaster cast will be removed.

The helmet will be made based on the casting. Take someone with you and also

take a bottle, pacifier (if he uses them), toys that take music or noise to

distract him.

Check out www.plagiocephaly.org/support - there is some good information

there about the casting process. Best of wishes with that and please keep us

posted!!

Hi Heidi & welcome to our group!

We're glad to have you with us. Best of luck with next week's

casting. Do you know if the helmet you'll be receiving is a STARband

or a locally made helmet? I know it's not a DOCband becuz you'd have

to go to a Cranial Tech location, but this link will take you to step

by step photos of the DOCband casting. The casting Jeffry will get

will be different, but similar in many ways. Casting process for the

DOC Band. If this link doesn't work (my links never work for some

reason!) go to our " files " section in our group, then the " casting

process " .

I suggest bringing Daddy or someone else close to you & Jeffry for

the casting. Take his pacifier, blankie, bottle whatever soothes him

to help keep him calm. MOST babies scream, kick & cry during the

cast, but that's becuz they're frightened, they are not in any pain

whatsoever. They just don't like to be held down or have something on

their head or face! You might also want to bring a loud, musical toy

that my help distract him.

Would you mind telling us a bit more about Jeffry's plagio story?

Welcome again. Good luck next week.

Debbie, I am so glad that you got back to me. I am just so afraid

about all of this. My husband does not see it as a big deal. Jeffry

was born 2 weeks overdue, I was in hard labor for 19 hours and pushed

for 4. My OB kept telling us that he could feel the head, but what

he was really feeling was the side of Jeffry's head. I finally had a

c-section, and that is when we realized that his head was oddly

shaped, but the peds doctor told us it would " round out " . I never

did, it has gotten much worse. When Jeffry was born they gave him

the heal stick test and we found out the he was born with out a

thyroid, so he has to take a pill every day to produce a steriod to

act like he has one, and now this. I am a stay at home mom, my

husband teaches high school. We are very thankful that we are up

here in MN, where Mayo Clinic is the hospital here. But I am very

afraid that we should be seeing a children's hopsital. The doctor

that we are seeing did not explain anything to us, just told us to

come in for the casting. Can you see why I am so uneasy about all of

this. I have no idea what kind of band it is. Help!!! Heidi

Hi Heidi,

I see that Debbie has already told you just about everything to

expect during the casting, so I'm not going to repeat it all! I just

wanted to welcome you to the group and to wish you luck at next

week's casting!

Heidi,

Hi and welcome to the group! I really can't comment too much on this type of

casting, I am only familiar with the DOC band procedure, and I would hate to

share an experience that you may not even be in for! Generally speaking, I

think most will have to do a plaster cast, using a stocking to protect the

head, and it will take about 10 minutes to layer the strips of plaster. The

plaster hardens (it will get warm) and they seperate it- later to form a mold

of the cast to be used as the inside of the helmet shape. I hope some

members that live in Minnesota or have used the Mayo clinic can elaborate (or

correct me) more for you. Good luck and let us know how Jeffry is doing!
