My 8 months old son is going for an assessment for a helmet in two

weeks and I'm wondering whether it would be helpful to give him a

super short haircut. My husband likes his hair longer and so do I

but I really want the craniofacial doctors to see the severity of

his shape. Kale has lots of hair which masks the severity of the

plagio. In fact my family comment that his head looks as if it's

gotten better but it's because his hair has grown in quite thick.

Only when I look at him in the tub do I realize that it's the same.

I like his hair long precisely because it does mask the plagio when

we go out and I am a little sensitive about people noticing his head

shape.

I'm thinking that I have to cut his hair anyway to help cut down on

the sweat those first few weeks. What do you think?

I wouldn't cut your son's hair if you don't want to...a good craniofacial doc will be able to feel th plagio in his/her hands. Also, some docs may do what our orthotist does, slip a stocking on the top of baby's head (just like a hat, baby doesn't mind). Having said that, Grant has been in his DOCband 5 weeks and I just took him in to the salon for a short buzzcut yesterday...mainly because it was sitting funny out the top of his band and I thought it would cool him down. I thought everyone would be upset we cut his fuzzy, fuzzy white blonde hair...but it really looks soooo cute!!! Like a big boy haircut. Whatever you decide, do what YOU want...even though your family might not see the plagio (I got a lot of "nobody's head is perfectly round" from family and Grant is classified as high moderate or moderate to severe by a couple of professional opinions!)...a qualified doc WILL, regardless of Kale's hairdo :). Good luck w/ the doctor!!!

Well, there are several thoughts I'm having on your question about a hair cut.

It is true that the band will cause his head to sweat quite a bit at first and

then off and on throughout the time he is in the band. The short hair might help

him to be more comfortable as well as help to cut down on the stinky head

problem that occurs when wearing the band. If it were just a matter of trying to

show the severity to the specialist I woud say take some wet head pictures and

bring them along to the appointment if you don't want to cut the hair. Maybe do

that first and if he agrees that Kale needs a band then make the decision as to

whether or not you should have his hair cut.

I certainly can understand your dilema, but ultimately you have to do what you

think is best for your situation. Good luck and I hope your appointment wtih the

specialist goes well!
