Charlotte:

It's pretty uncommon for even an older banded baby to take their band

off. My daughter wore her DOCband from 11.5 mos - 15.5 mos and never

once tried to remove it. If the child does try, some parents duct

tape the velcro closure to keep it closed and other techniques have

worked.

It sounds like you had a great specialist! Let us know what you

decide to do. Thanks for the update.

wore his DOCband up until 17 and 1/2 months old. He knew how to

undo the velcro but other than opening it and closing it once he

never bothered it. I did ask the orthotist for tips in case he did

bother it. She said to open the velcro strap and pull it out of the

metal slot, double loop a rubber band to make it smaller and slide it

over the velcro strap all the way down; then put the velcro strap

back through the metal slot and close like usual; then slide the

rubber band over the velcro strap. If they try to open the strap the

rubber band over top of it will prevent them from doing so. I

thought it was a great tip.

Charlotte,

It sounds like you had a really good appointment, that is welcome

news! I have heard quite a few parents used duct tape too keep

little fingers from taking off the velcro. Good luck!

My daughter, Novali, just got her STARband at 15 months. Every once

in a while she tugs at it but it hasn't come off. For the most part

she barely seems to notice it's even there! She hasn't really

discovered the strap yet though... We'll see how it goes, we're

going on 4 weeks now. Hope this helps!
