Guest guest
Hi I have been concerned about my sons head since he was about 1 mo old ,he was 2 mo premature so of course his head is softer, but I realized one side was quite flat so I took him to our physician and she showed me how to lay him it made him less flat on the side and more flat on the back, so it is very flat,IT LOOKS LIKE HIS NECK GOES STRAIGHT INTO HIS HEAD. SO THEN I TAKE HIM BACK TO THE DR WHO INFORMS ME HER CHILD TOO HAS A FLAT HEAD AND ITS OKAY ITS ONLY COSMETIC!!!Can you believe it ? so I went on my own found a facility who makes helmets found a specialist and i am going to demand she refer me.. insurance won't pay unless she does but any way am i wrong to question the dr? she doesn't seem too concerned but I am. I just don't want to overreact.
Guest guest
Hi & welcome to our group! You are definitely not overreacting and you are doing the right thing by questioning your Dr. So many of our group member's pediatrician have treated their concerns the same way your ped. is treating your concerns. You are doing the right thing! You also say your son's neck goes straight into his head - this sounds like it is torticollis - which means tightening of neck muscles. Torticollis is a leading cause of plagio, becuz the child is unable to keep their head straight up, it rests to the side of the tort which often leads to plagio. My daughter didn't have tort, but many of our parents children in our group have. I'm sure they'll give you much better information about it than I can. Torticollis is usually resolved thru sessions of physical therapy. Has your ped. ever mentioned the word torticollis to you? You can get some tort info at www.plagiocephaly.org/support. How old is your son now? Where are you located? Welcome again...you're doing the right thing! Guest guest
Welcome. Your son's head (flat in the back) sounds like brachycephaly. My son is a brachy baby. His head also appears quite large (it has taken on a short and wide shape). He has been in his STARBand helmet for 1 month, and we have seen some rounding. I too was faced with pediatricians who didn't take my concern seriously. I did find a specialist who did though. You're doing a great job looking out for your son... keep up the great work! Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the group! You have every right to question your doctor. This is YOUR child! Your not over reacting at all. Too many doctors are way too lax about this! Good for you for finding a specialist and a place that makes helmets! Keep up the good work Mom!!! Please keep us posted. > Hi I have been concerned about my sons head since he was about 1 mo > old ,he was 2 mo premature so of course his head is softer, but I > realized one side was quite flat so I took him to our physician and > she showed me how to lay him it made him less flat on the side and > more flat on the back, so it is very flat,IT LOOKS LIKE HIS NECK GOES > STRAIGHT INTO HIS HEAD. Guest guest
Hello new member and son, welcome to the group (sorry, I didn't catch your name) First and foremost, no way are you over reacting! You are a mother who is trying to provide the best life possible for your son, if that means questioning medical authorities, then so be it! If your ped isn't as concerned for her child's headshape, then that will be on her later down the road. Don't let her lackadaisical approach come into play when you are deciding something for YOUR son. If your gut is telling you to do something about his headshape now, then demand to be taken seriously. You obviously are a wonderful advocate for your son. You have already found a specialist and a place where they fabricate helmets. You are doing an awesome job! Stand your ground with your ped, don't let her deter you from something that you feel in your heart is right! Maybe seeing how determined you are might open your ped's eyes! Good luck, and keep us posted! Guest guest
Hi I just read your post and wanted to welcome you. My son was premature but only by 1 month. These doctors do annoys us parents, we know in our hearts when something is not right with our babies. I agree i don't care if its consider cosmetic, if it can be put right then they should go out of their way to help us. Would love to hear more about your and your son. Keep us posted to how you are doing. Guest guest
Hello and welcome - you are not wrong to question the doctor!!!!! If I had questioned our ped's word earlier then would have received treatment earlier and gotten more correction from her helmet. It sounds like you are doing just the right thing by getting in to see someone else and being prepared to demand and RX. Hang in there!
