Barbara,

I was breastfeeding my twins while they wore their DOC bands. The first

time I nursed Sara in it was about 5 minutes after the first time they put

it on her head. It hurt my arm really bad where the ear cutout was, but she

did very well with it. I did notice that it shifted when I craddled the

babies to feed them, but after a while we figured out what positions worked

best and they never skipped a beat after that. I had to make sure that they

were lined up well when I started to feed them. I never let them " roll "

into position because that was when the bands would shift the most. Like

all things with the bands, it takes a while to adjust. I always felt better

when they were wearing their bands while nursing because I was no longer

putting pressure on their flat spots by the way I held them.

I've heard that about elevating the babies while feeding to prevent ear

infections, but for me that is just impossible. My babies take bottles now,

and when they are both crying for a bottle and my 2 year old needs to go

potty, I have to just lay them on the floor to drink their bottles, and it

works just fine. In fact, my twins had several ear infections before their

DOC bands, and they have not even had fluid on their ears since their heads

got fixed. I'm going to mention that fact in my face to face insurance

appeal next week.

As far as the " V " on the front of the band - when it wasn't lined up, I

would first try to just shift it back in place, but if that didn't work, I

just took the band off and put it back on. Usually they were sweaty and

needed to air out anyway, and that's whey the band wouldn't shift easily in

the first place. Hope this helps some. Let me know if you have any more

questions about nursing a banded baby.

Hi Barbara

You could try the football hold for breastfeeding. My son was a large baby and I couldn't cradle hold him to feed him. I will try to explain it for you. Basically you hold baby as you would a football. You place them on the breast and tuck their torso under your arm on the same side.

As for the band, has been in one since June 18 and it moves off centre all the time. I try to shift it back but he protests! I found it much easier to take it off and put it back on. I complained about the movement and was told it was so they had room to grow into it! Go figure...On a positive note though his PT has noticed improvement in his head shape!!! Yipee!!

Help - Breastfeeding while in band

Hi,I am breastfeeding Sofia and am having a little bit of a difficult time with the band. When I cradle her the band seems to push up against her face and moves, she gets upset and starts wiggling. I tried nursing her just placing her lying down on the bed but I know that is not good because she needs to be elevated (to prevent ear infections). Any advise on another "technique"?This also may be a silly questions but the DOC band has a small "V" shape right in the middle. I was told that as long as the "V" is between her two eyes the band is on properly but I see that unless the "V" is lined up with her nose the band partly covers her ears and doesn't seem to be on right. Hope this makes sense. Also, when we see that the band has shifted should we just move it back into place or do we have to take it off and put it back on?Any advise would be appreciated.Thank youBarbara - Mommy to Sofia (6 days in her band) & CatalinaFor more plagio info

Thanks Joanne,

I'm gonna give the football hold a try also. Sofia sleeps in bed

with us (I know....maybe she shouldn't but we are very careful and I

am a very light sleeper). It was easy to just place my arm under her

to nurse her in the middle of the night but now I'll sit up and try

the different holds. Thanks

Glad to hear that has improvements.

Take care,

Barbara (Sofia & Catalina)

Barbara,

You will have a little shifting back and forward with the band, but if the ears are at all getting pinched or seem to be rubbing to close- ask if they can trim around the ear a little. This was a concern for me and I had them shave a little around the ear because it seemed to rub the tip- and it probably bothered me more than him- but hey, he couldn't tell me if it did! Have them check it out at your next visit and see if that's a possibility.
