Question about Plagiocephaly

Hello, I just happened across an article at Babycenter.com regarding

this, and am wondering if my son has it. He will be 4 mos. old on the

7th, and I have been noticing more and more over the past few weeks

that he has a definite flat spot on the back of his head. Its

probably about 3 inches in diameter and he's pretty much lost all of

the hair there as well. Of course, he sleeps on his back, and he

loves to lay on my Boppy pillow or in his carseat. We've just in the

past month really started making a concerted effort to put him on his

tummy, I guess I didn't realize how important it was at first. He

also has a big habit of moving his head back and forth from side to

side, kind of like he's rubbing/scratching the back of his head or

something. He does that a LOT. So I guess I'm wondering if this is

something I need to be bringing up at his 4 mo. check up, and does it

cause any physical harm? Or is it just basically an appearance

problem? Not that I want my son to have a flat head, but I won't be

as panicked about it if it doesn't do any damage! Any information

would be great! Thanks!

Like Kerri said, don't be surprised if your ped blows off your

concerns. Where do you live? Most Cranial Technologies will offer

a free evaluation (cranialtech.com) and they are terribly honest.

You can trust their judgment. They do turn children away saying no

treatment is necessary.

You can get some great repostioning tips at

plagiocephaly.org/support. You can also look at head types there.

I must say that my 2yo did have that spot in the back of her head

there with that bald spot. She also rubbed her head back and forth

and had a little flatness where the bald patch was. Her head iss

fine today. Of course I don't know if that compares to anything

your son has, just trying to settle your nerves!

You've found the right place for support!

Hi & welcome to our group!

I see you already got some great replies to your questions, I'd

simply like to second everything that was suggested.

Definitely bring this up to your pediatrician at his 4 mos check up.

Keep up with repositioning in the mean time. It sounds like you're

already doing a great job with it. Check out

www.plagiocephaly.org/support for repositioning tips that might help.

Do you have any cute pictures of him you could send us? If so email

them to plagiocephaly

Welcome again...Please let us know what your ped. says at your appt..

Hi and welcome to the group! I see you have received tons of info

already so I won't inundate you with more. I just wanted to inform

you that in our 'Bookmarks' section, you can find a folder full of

info regarding repositioning techniques and some products that might

help you out with that. Your son is at a really great age for

repostioning to be quite effective! Good luck to you, and please

keep us posted!
