Guest guest
My son has been diagnosed with plagiocephaly and I am moving to Tokyo in a matter of a few weeks. He is going to get a DOC band, but it seems that it can only be adjusted and the condition worked on in the States. Has anyone ever dealt with this problem abroad and specifically in Tokyo? I have other children who are to start school in the fall, so I hate to postpone the move if this is treatable in Japan.
Guest guest
Hi there, I'm sorry I didn't catch your name. My name is Gail and my twins wore DOC bands. I also lived in Tokyo a few years ago. Earlier this summer there was a new member looking for information about treatment in Japan. Her name was Katharine Christmas (I think). We had several discussions and came to the conclusion that there is no reasonable option for treatment in Japan, and definitely no place to have a DOC band adjusted. She opted to stay with relatives in Chicago for the time her child was being treated. How old is your son? If he is still young, you can expect fast results with the DOC band. My daughter wore hers for 6 weeks and my son wore his for 7 weeks. They both had moderate/severe plagio. It was worth every day that they wore the bands! I hope you can work something out. Will your children be going to school at ASIJ? We still have many friends in Tokyo, so if you want some connections, just let me know. Do you know where you'll be living yet? I'm jealous. We are ready to move back - hubby just hasn't found the right opportunity yet. Guest guest
Hello Maura (I hope I have your name right) and welcome! I'm sorry to hear of the dilemma you are faced with, but I believe the previous response about no treatment options in Japan is what I recall as well. I know that this is not particularly helpful to you, but I remember going around about this not too long ago with someone else in Japan and it was finally determined that there does not seem to be banding therapy options in Japan. Are you military? If so, maybe the military hospital there has someone in orthotics that is experienced with helmets. A long shot I'm sure, but worth a call maybe? How old is your child? If he is very young repositioning and increased tummy time could very well work wonders. It is harder to get good results with repositinoing and tummy time alone as the child gets older. I guess this is not too much help to you, I wish I had some great advice. :-( We would love to hear more about your son and I'm glad you have joined us.
