Guest guest
Soft contact lenses have increased risk of vision threatening condition http://www.tampabays10.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=28080 Video Story By: BoeyMiami, Florida - New information shows soft contact lens users have an increased risk for a serious eye infection. Cornea specialists at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami School of Medicine, documented an increase in fungal corneal infection and it appears to be related to soft contact lens use. Dr. Alfonso, Professor of Ophthalmology confirms treating an unusually large number of patients with fusarium keratitis, an infection that can affect your sight. Between January and March 2006, 21 cases of fungal infections were identified at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Out of that, 12 are contact lens users. Between 2000 and 2005, there was one patient identified with fusarium keratitis at the facility. Symptoms of fungal infection are unusual redness, eye pain, tearing and increased light sensitivity. People with those problems should see their doctor. In order to prevent a fungal infection doctors recommend washing hands with soap and hot water. Properly clean and disinfect your lenses and replace disposable contact lenses on time. Specialists are still trying to determine what's causing the increase in infections.
