Lawless in " The Encyclopedia of Essential Oils " says of Sweet Birchpg. 58 , " SAFETY DATA Methyl Salicylate, the major constituent is not exactly toxic but very harmful in concentration. It can be absorbed through the skin and fatal poisoning via this route has been reported. It is classed as an enviromental hazard or matine pollutant. " Next she sites White birch, betula alba and reccomends its use. I have seen little data on yellow birch which I sometimes use in small amounts for sprains strains and pains . I have , however seen it sighted on Native American sites for medicine. I limit the use to a 2 week period then switch to a different mix. Read somewhere that yellow birch actually has a component that simulates cortisone. Group members, we're lucky to have Butch posting again. I'll make the big announcement here (I sneaked it in a week ago, but now people can relate to Butch, someone I've known for seven or eight years now.) Butch and his wife had a bouncing baby boy a week ago, , born in Turkey. Butch was in a frenzy of getting-ready nesting before, and wasn't posting much. Now that I believe he'll be home a lot more due to nappies, feedings, and general daddiness (is that a word?) hopefully he'll be a frequent visitor here. I originally asked him to chime in a few weeks ago (before 's birth) to help with the preservatives issue, something he knows a lot about. Probably as much as the wintergreen issue -- so, when you have a chance, Butch, here's a reminder we need some preservative info. People were writing about the new " natural " preservatives and such, and I'd love to hear your latest on it all.
