You've heard the rumors. Some say breathing the air in New Orleans will make

you sick. Some people even a name for it, the Katrina Cough.

" You might have had the cough before, but now you're saying cause Katrina

came through then you got the Katrina Cough. " (New Orleans resident)

" It's not an epidemic. " (New Orleans resident)

" We hadn't had a problem breathing the air since we've been here. " (New

Orleans resident)

We've talked to a number of people in the surrounding communities of New

Orleans. Many of them say they've heard of the Katrina Cough, but they don't

know of anyone who has it.

Dr. Corey Hebert is a pediatrician at the Children's Medical Clinic located

on the Westbank. " Its really unbelievable. We have seen today probably in my

clinic 50 patients, probably 30 of them come in with a cough. "

If you're living in a moldy environment you're going to have health

problems, he says. If you're inhaling dust particles from all the

construction, then

you're going to have health problems, Hebert says. " There are extra molds,

extra allergens, extra viruses, more numerous and more diverse viruses. You

got to remember everybody left here, then they all came back. "

Dr. Hebert explains that the symptoms to watch for include: Runny nose,

problems breathing, prolonged coughing and congestion. " You could have walking

pneumonia, bronchitis, pneumonia caused by a mold; which is a bad pneumonia as

a oppose to a bacteria. "

Here's some universal advice for anyone planning to move back to New

Orleans, get a Tetanus shot. " If you happen to fall on the street and get cut.

There

was a toxic covering across this city. That's going to cause a problem for

you in that wound, " says Doctor Hebert.
