Dear Senate,

Pillai et al, in the January issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry pp45-51, have studied adolescent mental illness in the Indian state of Goa. Compared to any UK studies, the rates of pathology are much lower.

For example clinical ADHD is present at only 0.2% - note well Big Pharma who have benefited from the labelling of so mamy young people in more affluent countries! Strong support from the immediate family is the best protective factor (OR 0.2) against mental illness. 13 year olds with more Western lifestyles e.g. partying, shopping, are more likely to present with pathology (mainly emotional disorders).

Lessons here for English parenting?

Jai Hind,

Woody.
