Dear Senate,

This Tuesday proved memorable for two exceptional doctors.

Mike Shooter of Young Minds gave an inspiring conference paper on Talking Therapies in Child & Adolescent Mental Health - the context is partly school counselling plans in his native Wales and partly the training initiative for primary mental healthcare from Layard (i.e. children and families should benefit as well as working adults !). Socially excluded and alienated schoolchildren in the mineless valleys were the focus of Mike's talk.

Travelling home afterwards, I happened to read the Guardian, and saw Goodman's long interview on his charity Youth in Mind. This is strongly shaped by the Screening views of the Institute of Psychiatry. Senators may wish to see his website for young people: www.youthinmind.co.uk

Woody.

Very true, . I think the Social Exclusion Task Force would acknowledge that, too, unlike some of our nursing colleagues.

This document, though, is aimed far more widely than at one professional group, or even agency: housing, hospitals, criminal justice, employers, across the board. It is about trying to get everyone aware that if you make an impression on any single member of a family, you affect everyone else (children included). I haven't read it closely enough to really work out what the implications are for health visiting.
