Guest guest
Hi prior to my change of job last summer, I was working as part of an integrated childrens centre team. At this time we were just coming to the end of undertaking routine 8-9 month hearing tests, and were focusing our assessment on speech and language assessment (devised in collaboration with our childrens centre speech and language therapist) to compliment the hearing test forms in use. This was predominantly used in an attempt to identify any early issues or concerns in relation to parent child interaction and socialisation. It was also used as an opportunity to further advertise universal groups and activities and those activities targeted at encouraging speech and language development. We were not undertaking any physical examination but referring for full assessment if health or development issues were identified. The Book Start pack was given out at this time. It was anticipated that following withdrawal of the 8-9 month hearing test, this contact would continue. These assessments were generally undertaken by a health visitor and nursery nurse, and the importance of the health visitor imput was recognised. Appropriate pages within the red book were completed at this time. At this time, childrens centres were becoming mainstreamed within the locality, and there were some tensions between the requirements of the restructured health visiting requirements within the PCT and the Sure Start ethos in relation to progressive universalism. I hope this is of some help, if you would like more info please let me know. Nicky
