This seems to be yet another example of how the NMC are not able to protect the public in respect of health visiting practice - it would be interesting to hear what it is about the title 'SCPHN' that they think protects. Clearly it is not the competences associated with that title that protects, or it would not be necessary to have more than one area of practice annotated and it would not be necessary to have any additional preparation to cover both SN and HV. I wonder if it is the same on the first part of the register, ie, does someone who is RN (adult) who then completes a shortened programme for RN (child) or RN (MH) etc, then have only one annotation still? It all seems very unsatisfactory and ill-considered.We desperately need this to be sorted and do need to challenge the trotting out of 'we protect the public' messages from NMC whilst simultaneously citing practices that clearly do nothing to protect!Thank you , for sharing this and I hope you get something sorted out soon. best wishesOn 30 Jun 2012, at 12:51, liz.plastow@... wrote:I think the NMC are getting confused with family health nurses which was a completely separate issue and FHN's were piloted in Scotland and hence the circular. This appears to be forgotten??LizSent using BlackBerry® from Orange registration as a Health Visitor following completion of Health Visiting CourseFAO Gill Coverdale and Jan GoldsmithDear Gill and JanI understand from Dr Val Thurtle of the Anglia Ruskin University that students of Health Visiting who are already on the SCPHN register as school nurses cannot be annotated as being HV trained on the Nursing register, though in some instances this has been allowed to happen. If this is the case, I would urge you to reconsider your stance. I presume this means that these qualified nurses such as myself who have met all of the competencies and passed all of the exams are then unrecognized as HVs.My concerns are:- This is very confusing when asked by members of the public that I am working with are you a Health Visitor. The answer- well kind of? Ive passed all the tests and jumped through all of the hoops but my professional body will not recognize me?-This is equally confusing for professionals eg at child protection case conferences the invites are for the HV. This causes huge problems in practice and long winded explanations.- Do you think this inequity of some nurses being allowed on the SCPHN register twice but others told no is equitable?-The NMC should be supporting nurses to make the most of their professional qualifications whilst protecting the public, not causing stress and distress to us.-What happens when I want to work in a different Trust to where I currently work? Are they going to recognize my qualification or lack of despite having done 7 months training to become a 'HV' . Is there some record of the passing of the competencies to practice as a HV so that if a new employer or a client should wish to check then they can be satisfied? I would like to request to have my annotation changed if I can only be on once I would like it to be annotated HV to reflect the area in which I am currently working please.-The NMC sent me a circular dated 2004 when I asked what training I needed to do to transfer from being a school nurse to a HV so this is not a new issue, Im wondering if this has caused problems in the past.It seems to be a glitch in the system.-The HV implementation plan idea is to increase numbers of HV not put people off!I look forward to hearing from you,Regards DentonSCPHN_____________________________________________________________________________________________________This email, and any files transmitted with it, is confidential.
