Jo, how about this practice conundrum (highlighted in Helen ' 2012 book):

why is the evidence so strong that health visitors can identify risk factors for child abuse,

and so weak that health visitors can prevent child abuse?

Good luck, Woody.

Subject: Interview advice for Health Visitor Course

Hi,

I am new to this group, I am currently working as a school nurse. I have applied for a place on the Health Visitor Course and have been invited to an interview in May. I would appreciate any help or advice as I really want to get on the course!

I have been asked to do a 10 minute presentation and a 1500 word critical reflection on a contemporary issue in Health Visiting.

Please can anyone help??!! Any ideas will be gratefully received,

thanks so much

Hi Jo So glad you posted on SENATE to ask for some advice and hope you are successful with the interview and get the place. I have been a health visitors for more years than I like to say and it has been a fantastic job for me in all the related ways I have undertaken it. Thinking about the interview in terms of a critical issue, I could make several suggestions. You need to make sure you are au fait with all the information coming out around health visiting and especially the new info that came out with the school nurse implementation plan. So suggestions: · The pathways either from midwifery to health visiting or health visiting to school nursing which may be a good one for you as you are working as a school nurse. The handovers have always been difficult and the pathways are full and interesting to read and so would give you a lot to critique· How we move health visiting and indeed school nursing from a child protection/safeguarding/vulnerable children service to an early intervention and prevention service· Building community capacity and the Big Society· The wider public health role of the health visitor linking it to public health developments· Recruitment and retention· Leadership· Use of information technology in the service and on the move· Use of evidence and how this applies in practice· Listening to the voice of the child and young person and of the parent Hope this helps – you will find a lot of resource now on the web and my advice would be to do something that helps them see you adjusting from a school nursing to a health visiting role so you really use the present knowledge you have. Hi Jo,

A contemporary issue is:

Research has shown that HVs are quite good at identifying the health needs of parents and children but not so good at identifying with up to date information about services on offer , correct contact names, tel nos,

email addresses , venue addresses of useful agencies and organizations in each neighbourhood that can help with identified health needs.

Simply knowing who and what services are available and keeping this information up to date is a huge task.

Reflect upon the way in which for the future ICT services, library services and community development agencies

might help the HV to link people and families and children to the services and agencies ( outside the NHS) that can be helpful to meet helth needs and facilitate human flourishing.

Malcolm

Hi JoHow resourceful of you to use this group! I would advise that you utilise the resources and expertise from SENATE to help with your interview, having an awareness of key issues will certainly be advantageous at interview. You obviously need to be aware of the HCP and the HV Offer and I would suggest you research current public health issues and really consider why you want to be a Health Visitor.Interviews should not be about testing your knowledge of health visiting but whether you are considered to have the right attributes. Health visiting is challenging work and requires exceptional skills to practice safely and effectively and some of that you learn on the course but more than that you have to demonstrate a genuine wish to improve health outcomes for children and families!Given you have sought advice on senate suggests you are on track!Good luckLizSent using BlackBerry® from OrangeFrom: "Jo Fox" <jo-fox@...>Sender: Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2012 11:33:22 -0000< >Reply Subject: Interview advice for Health Visitor Course Hi,I am new to this group, I am currently working as a school nurse. Thank you so much to you all who replied to my plea for help! I am overwhelmed

with the amazing response and fantastic ideas that you have all suggested. I

certainly have a lot to think about now! I have managed to get a place at the

conference in Telford on Friday (Thanks to Cheryll for suggesting this), so I'm

sure that will give me lots more ideas too.

Watch this space, I'll let you know how I get on at my interview on 8th May,

thanks again I really do appreciate it

Kind Regards
