NCB Research May Bulletin"maggie@..." <maggie@...>

No decision about me without me? Listening to children and young people in the health service:

A policy and research seminar

Tuesday, 17th July 2012, 9.30am to 11.00am (refreshments served from 9.00am)

National Children’s Bureau, 8 Wakley Street, London EC1V 7QE

This free seminar will be an opportunity to explore how we can work together to ensure the NHS and public health services listen to and act upon the views and experiences of children and young people. Attendees will hear the key findings from a review of children and young people’s views, commissioned by the Children and Young People’s Health Outcomes Forum, with a particular focus on disadvantaged children or those with complex needs. This will be followed by a discussion about how the different parts of the health system can involve children and young people and address their views and concerns, with a panel including the Department of Health’s Director for Patient and Public Engagement and Experience, Streets.

Please join the debate and help us ensure that the government’s ambition for patients to have ‘no decision about me without me’ becomes a reality for children and young people.

Contributors

· Streets, Director of Patient and Public Experience, Department of Health

· Barbara Hearn OBE, Deputy Chief Executive of NCB and member of the Children and Young People’s Health Outcomes Forum

· Ivana La Valle, Director of Research, NCB

Our Young NCB Research Advisors can support your research!

We lead a diverse group of young Research Advisors who currently meet four times a year on Saturdays. The group has received training on research methods and health policy, and has already been consulted by a range of researchers on various aspects of studies, including refining research questions, carrying out primary data collection, through to interpreting findings.

If you would like to enhance the quality of your research by involving young people, please have a look at the options here. For further information or to book a session, please contact Jo Lea (jlea@... or 020 7843 6388).

New NCB Reports available

NCB has just published a new research review on Children’s experiences and views of health provision. At the time when the government is taking forward major reforms of the NHS and public health service, this review provides valuable learning on how health services can be improved to better meet needs of its younger users. The findings of this report will be discussed at the seminar on 17th July, above.

Following on from the 2011 report, The ripple effect , NCB recently published Beyond the cuts: Children’s charities adapting to austerity, exploring the extent and impact of the reductions in public funding on the children’s voluntary sector.

New Research Summary available

Please take a look at our Research Summary series including the latest Summary on Care – a stepping stone to custody?, based on our study commissioned by the Prison Reform Trust.
