Guest guest
Interesting report, still focused on children exclusively. I was really keen to see the IT bits, but it's actually pretty vague. They're right to highlight limited implementation of existing stuff, but that doesn't mean the whole system was particularly useable in health visiting. We never even used a fraction of the child health systems capacity to support HV and SN practice, at least not in England. Wales did better, but there's still lots to do. Other issues in the past have been that they tried to make HV contacts into episodes of care and link it to diagnoses and procedures. This meant a lousy fit with professional practice, plus an implied individual 'patient' as the focus of care. Previously, they've tried to do stuff on the cheap by squeezing HV practice into a DN or GP model of health care, with more meaningful data left out than included. No better than the parent held record. Hospital paeds structures didn't fit either, but they didn't seem to bother much with a minority service. I've not seen any progress in HV IT for more than 10 years, but maybe we can still hope? Guest guest
On the IT front there has been a short pilot of the use of Blackberrys to record contacts, miles travelled etc in Devon recently. What was new about this was the 'live' element of this use of the technology and of course cutting down on paper recording. The HVs who used it liked it and felt it made them more efficient, able to spend 'quality time' with their clients and increased their safety when visiting unfamiliar families. Hope that helps!
