Guest guest
, I tell my clients that hair loss is usually expected to begin around 3 months after surgery and stop around 6-9 months with likely regrowth. The lifecycle of a hair follicle is typically 60-90 days so when the hair follicles begin to fall out at around 3 months it is based on what the diet was like 2-3 months before. That is the usual frustration of patients because the hair doesn’t typically fall out when their intake is low but when it is good and it doesn’t make sense to them. I typically do not recommend a supplement of biotin or zinc since they are usually getting enough in a multi. Attached is an article I wrote on this topic for a newsletter. Not a scientific research article but for patients. This is providing that the hair loss is believed due to protein deficiency (based on labs and r/o other probable causes). Also, have you seen benefits of biotin and zinc supplementation? Guest guest
I have found that most supplements are very poor in Biotin content (10-30% of RDA). We recommend a separate supplement of 500-1000 mcg per day (as they only come in 1000 mcg tablets). Zinc is typically 15 mg in supplements, but additional is probably a good idea. Guest guest
Telogen effluvium (rapid hair shedding) can occur as a result of rapid weight loss. Nutritional deficiencies can contribute to increased hair shedding by weakening hair shafts that cause breakage to the hair and slow regrowth. Principal nutrients that are involved include vitamin A, certain B vitamins, biotin, vitamin C, copper, iron, zinc, and protein--all of which are malabsorbed to some degree by gastric bypass patients. Surgery and anesthesia can also result in temporary hair loss. With time, adequate protein, and vitamin supplements, hair loss will subside. See also Neve, H.J., et al. " Reversal of Hair Loss following Vertical Gastroplasty when Treated with Zinc Sulphate. " Obesity Surgery. 6(1): 63-65. ABSTRACT Background: Nutritional complications following surgery for morbid obesity include both vitamin and mineral deficiency. Severe cases of zinc deficiency can lead to alopecia, diarrhoea, emotional disorders, weight loss, intercurrent infection, bullous-pustular dermatitis and hypogonadism in males. Hair loss may occur after vertical gastroplasty (VG). Methods: Diffuse hair loss occurred in 47 out of 130 patients who underwent VG. All patients had been routinely advised to take a multivitamin supplement, but 47 developed hair loss despite taking the supplement. These patients were then prescribed Zinc Sulphate 200 mg three times a day. There was no alteration in the vitamin supplementation. Results: Arrest of hair loss and regrowth occurred in all patients. However, five patients reported recurrence of hair loss after stopping zinc. This loss was reversed within 6 months of recommencing zinc 600 mg daily. Ten control patients had no hair loss after gastrointestinal surgery. Conclusion: Significant hair loss occurred in about one-third of patients after VG, and was reversed by zinc supplementation.
