Guest guest
I got a box of samples from the company. They taste good intially but the after taste is very bitter and I 've yet to find someone who likes them. They have a better quality calcium form than Optisource (Fusion is Calcium is a citrate/carbonate blend vs all calcium carbonate); their sweetner is sucrolose instd of aspartame and they have 600 IU vitamin d vs 400 IU in Optisource. the benefit of the Bariatric advantage is that the Calcium is all citrate, separate fron the M/V/M, overall enhancing absorption. Guest guest
I'm curious about Fusion also. We are currently using the Bariatric Advantage products, but I listen to patients tell me over and over that they hate the BA calcium. THe Fusion is supposed to provdie enough calcium. I spoke with the rep. He told me if you take 4 of the Fusions it provides 800mg calcium carbonate and 200mg of calcium cirate. I questioned him regarding the absorption of Ca carbonate after Roux-en-y. He said hewould send me labs. I got the labs in he mail the past week. It had a serum calcium level before and after taking the Fusion product. It was increased, but doe that really prove anything? I was thinking that a bone density would be the only true way to judge Ca+ absorption. Is that correct? Also, from speaking to the Fusion rep, i got the impression that they attitude was "our vitamin might not provide enough calcium, but patients are more likley to take it." I'm not sure how I feel about that. I do think it tastes better thatn the BA stuff. Guest guest
I have the same feeling about the Optisource vitamins. Although we've had many discussions on this listserv regarding the absorption of the calcium in this product I have never had any patients present issues with calcium - they are always within normal limits. So my feeling is if isn't broke don't fix it! Guest guest
What are you checking for B12 – serum B12 or MMA? B/c I have several pts that take vitamins similar to this and have serum B12 WNL but when we check MMA it is sometimes low. Just a thought…. K. Several of our patients who are about 2 years post op have been telling me about Bariatric Fusion vitamins that they have been purchasing online. These vitamins have improved their compliance with our vitamin regimen. They only have to take two chewable vitamins twice per day. I am concerned about B12 absorption. I checked the nutritionals, and 4 of the vitamins, taken as recommended, they provide almost 9000% of the RDA for B 12. I have a couple of patients who have been taking these vitamins for over a year and their follow up blood work has been fine. Does anyone else have any experience with these vitamins? Anything that I can recommend to improve vitamin compliance would be appreciated. Guest guest
Methylmalonic acid – you can test urine or blood – urine is cheaper. But it is a more accurate way to determine if there is a B12 deficiency or not. My reference book says it is increased with B12 def (serum < 0.4micromol/L ; 0-3.6mmol/mol creatinine). K.
