How do you figure the cost of nutrition services into the surgery price? Is

this something your accounting department worked out? We were losing patients

because we required them to pay for pre-op RD appointments up front. We have

since been offering this service for free. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

We are trying to gather statistics on how many people utilize our

nutrition follow-up services for 1 month, 3 month, 6 month and one year

post op.

Our patients are not billed for these services as the price of this is

figured into the surgery price. We are a department of the hospital

that provides pre and post op nutrition, exercise and psychological

services to 3 Bariatric Surgeons in the hospital network.

I know I have seen emails in the past regarding the difficulty in

getting patients to return for their follow-ups. Does anybody have any

statistics on percentage of surgery patients that come back for their

follow-ups for nutrition? If you do that would be wonderful. I really

like this listserve and have gained a lot of valuable information from

it. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Hi Cheryl,

When bariatric surgeries were growing here,

the hospital accounting dept. figured how much they should charge for each

presurgery evaluation and added that to the cost of the surgeries. Then they

created our department figuring that would pay for our salaries ( we have 1.5

RD’s, 1.5 EP’s, program mgr, 2 Bariatric RN’s and 1.5

psychologists). I believe each discipline’s (psych, nutrition, exerc.)

evaluation is $178. If a patient decides not to have surgery or goes elsewhere

for surgery, then they are sent a bill (they sign paperwork acknowledging this

upfront). They also figured in 4 post-op nutrition and one exercise

physiologist post-op appt into the surgery price. We are not able to bill for

post-op over a year or if patients want to come over 4 times in first year.

Let me know if you have any more

questions. Missy Bizzarro RD, LD
