Post op diets in hospital

I recently started as a Bariatric Dietitian and was approached by one

of our surgeons with an issue. Currently our patients are receiving a

clear liquid tray containing juice (we recommend to dilute with water),

tea, broth, and sugar-free jello post op day 1 and 2 in the hospital.

The surgeon is very concerned about the patients receiving juice on

their tray as he thinks some have experienced dumping syndrome, however

the food service department is not agreeable to add Crystal Light as it

is too expensive. What are other people providing at their hospitals?

Have you run into similar problems? Thanks.

I am in agreement with Kerri on this issue. We have been sending water bottles( 2 per day) with 2 pkgs of Crystal Light so pts can mix themselves or drink just the water. We do provide 30 ml medicine cups and regular cups so pts do not drink directly from the bottle. On our Stage 2 bariatric diet, we send broth, sugar free gelatin, sugar free lemonade (Wylers) and a CIB no sugar added. We were using Fruit 2O a few years back, but pts did not like this product and it was being wasted.

We have our nurses well trained to now that these bariatric patients should NOT be having juices, so they always contact me or the docs when a regular, clear liquid diet is ordered by mistake. With most of the docs, we have protocol orders to change it to the appropriate diet.

I agree with your surgeon and would not serve them juice. And if you do serve them juice, somebody should dilute it for them and not leave that up to them to do; I'm a firm believer in serving them what they can eat and not something that they themselves need to alter prior to eating/drinking. If your food service department won't serve the brand Crystal Light, would they be willing to stock up on the Target or Wal-Mart brand of sugar-free drink mixes? They are a fraction of the cost.Kerry L.
