Hi Vickie:

Sorry to hear about your hair loss.Surgery can really wreck havoc on the hair--I feel for you.

Perhaps you need to consult with an endocrinologist. Most telogen effluvium is caused by low iron and/or hormone imbalances. Since you resolved the iron issue and your hair has not improved, it's not the iron in your case. I'd check the thyroid, estrodial,LH, FSH, DHEAS, testosterone--free and total. With your light periods, it might be lowering estrogen. If this is the case, bioidentical estrogen can fix this in most cases.

It's not enough to have the hormones in the normal range, but it's important to go to a doc who understands their ratios and relationships to other hormones. You might want to ask Dr. Kolb about your hair loss/ hormones. I e-mailed her about hair loss a couple years back, and she has a better understanding of hair loss than does all the worthless dermatologist I've been to.

Also, check out www.womensinternational.com , they will send you a list of docs in your area who treat hormone disorders with bioidentical hormones.

I know a woman in AZ who had low estrogen and CTE and she grew her hair back on bioidentical estrogen/progesterone. too. Don't loose hope.

I ended up taking iron injections daily for two weeks then decreased the amount weekly along with oral iron. Now I take one injection a month and an iron capsule called Nefrex. It is prescribtion only but of course my insurance doesnt cover it. However taking the iron and drinking the protein didnt help my hair loss. I contribute that to flax seed oil and biotin...who knows, maybe it is the combo.....

Marie: Thank you for your response. I have and do take bioidentical hormones for several years now. Dr. Nezhat was giving natural progesterone and estrogen a long time before it became popular. He does check my hormones on a regular basis. I believe the hair loss was caused by the gastric bypass surgery as you do not absorb vitamin/minerals and amino acids as you should. That is one of the biggest side effects and one reason a lot of people have to have theirs reversed! The gel cap flax seed and biotin have stopped the hair loss for now....if it would only grow back!!!! I have fuzzy hair where I was once bald. I'm just learning to be greatful for all God has given me!!!

Good! So it's not hormonal--what about getting vitamin B and other vitamin INJECTIONS?

Are you eating enough protein? We need 60 grams per day. I'm going to get egg white powder shake mix at Whole Foods. Maybe protein is the issue? Also, with iron hair loss, it might take 1-2 years for your hair to regrow AFTER your serum ferritin reaches 70-125.It's not enough just not to be anemic anymore, the ferritin has to be over 70--preferably around 100 for a year at least.

Take Care,

-Marie: it did take about three years to become as anemic as I was. I couldn't take five steps without stopping to rest and my skin color was pasty gray. I have a picture of me on Halloween and I'm not dressed up but look dead!!! My ferritin is normal but my iron binding capacity is high and my red cells are high....so I cut back on the iron supplement and it falls low again....blah, blah, blah....I hope you're right and time is on my side. I drink a protein drink that I get from by doctor (that did the bypass) twice a day. And as I said I eat sushi five times a week, but my BUN as been low the last few times I've had blood drawn and that is a sign of protein deficency. I dont know how to get more than I do. If I drink more of the shake, I'd just throw it up...sorry, but that what happens when you have a stomach the size of a thumb. I wish someone made a protein pill.....

Vickie:

You poor dear, no wonder you have hair loss--the low protein--that will do it. I know with this kind of surgery you can't eat much, but try to eat/drink as much protien as possible.

Good luck to you!

Take Care,

: I started losing my hair about 4 month after gastric bypass surgery. That was also the same time I became anemic. I drank protein shakes, as much as I could hold and ate beets and spinach, even went to the juice bar and had fresh veggies jucied daily. Still my hair feel out and iron kept dropping. I contribute that to flax seed oil and biotin...who knows, maybe it is the combo.....

has gotten down to her goal weight and her hair is very thin, dry and really ugly looking compared to when she was a heavy girl. She has lost over 100 pounds and looks great cept that hair. She used to have gorgeous thick brown hair that looked so beautiful, but she is still happy to be thin, and she told me she has new growth coming in, I just have yet to notice it. My other friend Wende had the same procedure about 3 months later so she still has another 20 pounds to lose but her hair (always has been thinish) looks the same, never lost any of it, she says it was the protein shakes that she has been drinking the entire time her weight was coming off. They had different Dr's do the procedure as well.it is interesting to see the difference in how well Wende's hair has held up, lots of gastric bypass patients lose
