Couple questions since our TOGA coordinators really don't seem to care

what diet the patients are on:

Are you placing TOGA patients on liquid protein supplements?

Are you recommending vitamin/mineral supplement? If so, in general

what are you recommending? Have you seen deficiencies in this

population?

Are you doing one-on-one nutrition consults at the required visits or

having physician/nursing do the nutrition " consults " ?

Thanks,

The diet protocol given to us from the study does not even recommend

liquid protein supplements, therefor it is probably a good idea to

verbally recommend to patients that this is going to be a good source

of protein and nutrition during the liquid phase of the diet

progression. I also recommend nonfat plain greek yogurt, and

unflavored protein into soups, hot cereals, etc.

Vitamin/mineral deficiencies have not been studied, as there is

currently no data for this particular procedure. My clinical opinion

is that the same supplements should be used for TOGa as for lap band

patients: 1 chewable or liquid multi, and a calicum + D supplement.

In our clinic, the RD always conducts the nutrition assessment as a

one-on-one appointment pre-op.

Hope that helps. I would be interested if you are doing differently.
