He took an upper respiratory breath, shoulders and chest lifting and heaving. Makes you wonder. ***This sort of action is common for those taking a 'deep breath'. It is often accompanied by a sniffing sound as air is sucked in. Firstly, does not lifting the shoulders and chest decrease the ribcage's ability to expand? And secondly, by sniffing/sucking in air the nasal passages are decreased in size increasing the speed and thus temperature of the incoming air. (This also overrides a first line of defence of the immune system because microbes that would have been trapped by nasal hair are sucked straight through to the back of the throat!) Using a spirometric test (I think that is its name?) I tried a 'deep breath' and compared it to a 'normal breath' - Guess which one allowed more air into the lungs? When I left my nostrils alone and did nothing to try and expand my chest the 'normal breath' scored much higher!
