Guest guest
Steph, Kathy and all, The main thing is to do the research, then keep showing up and talking about choices. People often need repeated contacts with an idea, particularly an alternative idea, before that idea starts to take hold. As an example, many years ago, in a play group for my first child, another mom talked about homeopathy. I thought it was the most far-out, ridiculous idea ever--the more dilute something is, the more powerfully it works? You've got to be kidding! And then I got sick, was told that nothing could be done for my very severe allergies and to " learn to live with it. " Eventually I came to homeopathy, got well and the rest is history. So....plant the seed. Ask questions, point out alternatives, be gentle and calm. Don't try to force ideas on others, speak and listen respectfully. Bring easy, tasty and healthy foods (because people have this idea that healthy foods are tasteless, boring and take forever to make). As an example, I dated a guy for short time who, when he heard I was into natural foods, decided, without any evidence, that I must be a terrible cook. So he would cook for me, never allowed me to fix a meal for him. Toward the end of the relationship we went to a pot luck meal, I brought a yummy bean salad I had made and one of the other people there, a woman who did recipe development for General Mills (a food expert/foodie if there ever was one), demanded the recipe because it was so unusual (all I did was use honey and toasted sesame oil in the dressing, not rocket science!). He was stunned that natural foods could be so good. And lean on this group when things get tough in the rest of the world. That's what we are here for. She told us things like we should use 100% juice, eat whole grains, and limit fat. She recommended a popular commercially available flavored yogurt that even my non-traditional food friend said she would only give her kids for dessert! It is frustrating that we really don't promote Best Practice in this country. For many people, I suppose, this was a step in the right direction and we are satisfied with that. Guest guest
One thing that really bugs me is how so many in the medical and nutrition field will recommend a low fat diet for growing toddlers and children!!! They need the good fats, that is brain food!!! they need the raw butter, lard, tallow, duck fat, the wonderful cream from raw milk etc in their foods to developed good healthy brain cells! " I do not ask that Thou should give me some high or noble task. Give me little hands to fold in mine. Give me little children to point Thy way, over the strange, sweet path that leads to You. Give me little voices to teach to pray. Give me shining eyes Thy face to see. The only crown I ask to wear is this, that I may teach my children. I do not ask that I may stand among the wise, the worthy, or the great; I only ask that softly, hand in hand my children and I may enter at the gate.
