I am amazed how many folks I know personally NEVER COOK.

I stayed with a relative for a week or so and every meal was

from a restaurant or reheated leftovers from a restaurant. Now,

they were upper class, so it wasn't fast food. But you have

to think what kind of " culture " we have, that doesn't include

home-cooked meals.

I also wonder at the sheer trustingness of it. People assume

that if they plop down their money, what they buy is ok

to eat. They have no idea, and not much curiousity,

about what went into it.

Personally I feel like we've mortgaged our " culture " to

various corporations. Even in the crafts, which should

be creative, they have morphed into something where

you buy parts and hot-glue them together. We work,

we buy, we consume ... but do we *create*?

Heidi,

I agree with your musings. I, too, worry that we, as a society, have become

far too dependent. We have allowed money and technology to create helplessness

in many of our survival needs. And because we have become so helpless in many

ways, we determine that it is better not to ask questions since others

probably know better than we do. I can only hope that we are coming back to a

time of

personal responsibilty, which will then foster our creativity, thought, and

spirituality.

Irene,

My son and I occasionally go out for dinner on nights when I have to work

late. I only go to restaurants that make an attempt at organic foods or serve

Niman Ranch meats, but even then I usually regret that I didn't just whip

something up at home. The cost is usually ridiculous, and I prefer to have the

control over how everything is cooked. It may be pyschological, but food eaten

at

home just tastes better to me.

I just have this uneasy feeling about our future, when so many children are

being raised on fast-food. I see so many teen-agers around my neighborhood, (

and mind you, I live in an upper-middle class neighborhood), that look half

dead, and I have no idea how they are going to live long healthy lives. Sorry to

sound so doom and gloom, but it really is something that weighs on my mind

nearly every day. I hope there are enough of us to help spread the word and

encourage others to stop taking their health for granted, in order to create

some

change.

Because of allergies I pretty much cook all my food. I hear people say they

don't cook and I often wonder what they eat. I guess it is restaurants and

prepared frozen meals.I find most restaurant food appallingly bad. But I

guess if you are used to it, it seems OK. Interestingly enough my 2 year

old knows the difference. We were at a mall restaurant, one of those

extremely rare occasions, and my son asked for chicken. My husband gave him

some chicken from his sandwich and my son wouldn't eat it. I gave him some

of my beef and he wouldn't eat that either. It was terrible. I wouldn't

have eaten it either if I hadn't been so hungry. The thing is that the food

isn't just bad, there is a funky fake taste, probably MSG or something like

it. If you are not used to it, it is awful. But if you are used to it, I

think it is addictive. The thing is that so many people associate this

taste with what good food should taste like. To them real food tastes " boring " .

Watched it about a week ago! Will try to never eat fast food again!Carl & Amy <acwinston@...> wrote: Have you all seen this movie? We just watched it. It's quite the eye opener. The guy risked a lot to prove a point. We eat fast food about once every couple of months... we rarely eat out at all. But I do know people who eat it quite often.
