Guest guest
Docs, Have a 17 year old girl that wanted to come in for an exam. Do I have to have her parent present for the exam or only for treatment? Thanks! ph Medlin D.C.
Guest guest
Joe, if you know the parents well and they've signed an authorization, it may be fine to treat without them present. However, if she and the parents are totally new, I'd advise having one of them be there for the first appt and stay in the treatment room as you do the report of findings and first appt or two. Guest guest
I agree with Minga. I treat minors on their own after the first visit once we have a signed "Authorization to Treat a Minor" form (that we made up for this exact situation) in the file. I also have the guardian present for the first visit, report of findings, etc., and have a staff member sign as a witness that the guardian signed the form in their presence and gave verbal permission as well to treat the minor. And make sure you spell out your findings and treatment plan for the guardian so there are no misunderstandings. We learned that the hard way one time when a minor went home and didn't explain to their guardian that they would need to come in for several treatments. And updating the guardian directly as to progress is certainly advisable, since the kid usually goes home and answers "Nothin'" when asked, "What did the doctor say?" Lyndon McGill, D.C. Guest guest
Yes, forgot to say; I always have a follow up phone call with the legal guardian. The first and 2nd appt the guardian/ parent is there. Then the next 3-4 appts I do a f/up call to them. After that, if they're comfortable, I give them the option of getting a f/u call or not. Anytime the Tx plan changes, I call. Minga Guerrero DC abowoman@... Minors/ Rules on parents etc. Docs, Have a 17 year old girl that wanted to come in for an exam.
