Good News From the Capitol Dear Colleagues, Our Senate Bill 1580 (attached which is actually officially the Governor’s bill) which the Oregon Chiropractic Association worked extremely hard on with the coalition that the OCA built to gain “SECTION 8” is up for a full vote on the House tomorrow morning FINALLY! Section 8 which is found on page 4 of SB-1580 is all of the non-discrimination language the OCA and its coalition fought hard for over the last several weeks. In addition thanks to a true friend of the profession Co-Chair of the House Health Committee Rep. Jim we got addition appeals language which Jim did on his own in attempt to protect us further from discrimination by the coming Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs). This section calls for a dispute resolution process or peer review process for an aggrieved provider who feels he or she has been discriminated against….further his language requires the Oregon Health Authority to adopt Administrative Rules on how to resolve claims…. If indeed SB-1580 is passed off the House floor and it will, the bill goes directly to the Governor’s office for his signature which he will sign as this is in fact the Governor’s bill….!! Colleagues I just want to take a moment to thank all of you for stepping up, this is a perfect example of what we can do together with many shoulders against that great stone wheel pushing as one unified force. Thank you to all of you that stepped up in an emergency and gave to Kitzhaber’s campaign when I asked early with many of you having already given money to Bill Bradbury who himself is a wonderful friend of the profession. Thank you to all of you colleagues who nearly two years ago now showed up to each one of the then candidate Kitzhaber city stops after winning the Democratic primary and introducing yourselves giving support to representing the profession all of you in Bend, Lincoln City, Pendleton, Medford, Eugene and Portland. Thank you to all of you who came to the event for Kitzhaber that Dr. Dan and Darla Beeson were so wonderful to have at their home and gave your hard earned money AGAIN! Thank you to all of you who showed up to all the Oregon Health Authority Statewide Coordinated Care Organizations community round table meetings voicing the opinion patients want to see us! They want to see their CAM providers we must have non-discrimination within the CCOs was your battle cry! …and thank you for all the emails you sent into the Oregon Health Policy Board and your patients demanding that non-discrimination language be added to the “Transformation Bill!!” I really feel when we all step up work together take the time to do so there is simply nothing we cannot and will accomplish in the coming years! Yep, all those shoulders pushing worked it was Kitzhaber, MD, who made sure when his bill came out that it contained our non-discrimination language….Rep. Jim added the appeals language as a “cherry on top!” SO WELL DONE TO US ALL…and WE ARE JUST GETTING WARMED UP! …TO THE CONTINUED GOOD FIGHT!!!! Blessings, Vern Saboe
