Chestnuts Nutritional Benefits:

The Chestnuts are originated from North America and grown and found in

the hilly forest regions of North America, and generally found and grown

in Europe, China, Japan and now it is being cultivated all over United

States of America for its nutritional benefits. Chestnuts are edible and

starchy, pleasantly flavored and generally available in winter season.

Chestnuts plants belong to the family Fagaceae botanically, and to the

geuns Castenea, which are monoecious, deciduous trees, bearing both

female and male flowers in the same tree.

Female flowers of chestnuts produce two or three edible kernels that

have starchy, sweet and creamy nuts. Different species of chestnuts are

cultivated around the world, and among them, the genus, Castenea

Crenata in Japan, Castenea dentata in North America, Castenea Sativa in

Europe, and Castenea mollisima in China. China is the largest exporter

of chestnuts to the other Countries while United States of America is

the main importer of Chestnuts from European Union.

Chestnuts nutritional profile includes; chestnuts provide energy

approximately 215 Kcal per one hundred grams of chestnuts and other

nutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, dietary fiber and zero

cholesterol, also comprise many essential vitamins such as folates,

pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, Vitamin C,

Vitaimin A and minerals namely, potassium, sodium, copper, calcium,

manganese, magnesium, zinc, phosphorous, iron, and phyto sterols, which

contribute to promote general health and wellness.

Chestnuts nutritional benefits include; Chestnuts are nutritionally more

superior to walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts, and very delicious in

taste. Chestnuts contain low calorific value when compared to other nuts

and seeds, but contain high content of minerals, phytonutrietnts,

vitamins, which contribute to promote good health. Chestnuts contain

carbohydrates very similar to that of corn and potatoes, but it contains

more protein than sweet potatoes. Due to the presence of much content
