Guest guest
Due to data protection rights, patients can ask for a full report and file from their doctor in the UK. Some doctors allow this to happen without a written request, others require a written request. But I have a complete copy of my EMG which I have shown to another doctor for an off the record second opinion. As for one doctor having all the reports, in the UK whoever you have seen first will receive the full and final record of all of your treatments. For me, as I started through an orthopaedist, the orthopaedist has my full and final record, with each carer in the chain having their own part. It is very important to keep track of all doctors and appointments - should you be referred to another consultant, often they will ask for the full record of who has seen you. The systems between the US and UK are different - but not so different. At the end of the day we are all responsible for making sure we understand and " own " our own situations - I think that is the way private medicine turned things in the US, and that is the way the UK is making things too. As both a US and UK citizen, it is interesting to see more similarities than differences. - Donna in London
