Guest guest
Hi Carol, Ron uses the ergonomic one, the one with a handle that looks like a dinosaur bone (he says that is appropriate for him...) I tried it, and it seemed to be ok for me, as the ones with the curved handles hurt to hold them when my hands are hurting. His is adjustable too, and cost about $25 at the pharmacy. by all means, get something to help you! Judi
Guest guest
Thanks, Judi. That sounds like the one that will be easiest for my hands. I'm going to go look for one today. I think " dinosaur " describes how my body feels right now. Guest guest
I make slip covers to decorate my quad cane. You can find fabric at most walmart stores for every holiday and to match different outfits. Cathleen in Arkansas
Guest guest
Hello Carole, Bonnie, etc. I started using a cane several months ago. It really does seems to help. I only have two so far. A black one that folds up and a plain silver metal one with a padded handle. I use the metal one most of the time and the black one for " dress. " Carole, I can't seem to get the hang of using the cane in the hand opposite the leg that bothers me. For one thing, that hand/wrist/etc. seems to hurt a lot more, and second I just can't coordinate myself correctly using it in the opposite hand! LOL Kathy > Bonnie, > I, too, use a cane, and have approached it just the way you have. I have an > umbrella stand full of canes for various occasions. Guest guest
Everyone, please tell me where to find attractive canes. I know there are some websites but haven't had to time to really check them out yet. Would love to know where you got the one with the dragon head and marble in the mouth. I saw someone yesterday who is just a slight acquaintance, and she noticed the cane and asked why I was using it. I told her it was my new accessory and just kept walking. Anybody have any good responses for people who are just being nosey? Bonnie [ ] canes In reply to the cane issue.I too have been using a cane often when out. I don't use it at work but just limp along. It's bad when your patients say "gosh, you walk worse then I do!", etc.I have several. A carved red one with a dragon head & marble in the mouth. But the handiest is one that folds up to about 12 inches or so. I got it at a drug store while visiting an aunt in Michigan. I put it in my carry on bag when we travel as I especially need it after being on a plane.Joyce , RN Atlanta
Guest guest
Bonnie, I have had people actually ask me when I'm going to "get rid of that cane"! I answered that, in fact, I will need it even more in the future! That sat that guy down! Some of the "medical" type drugstores do carry nice canes. There is one not too far from me that does, I know. If anyone in your area advertises that they carry medical supplies, call to see if it includes nice canes. Once, a while back, I asked for canes in a local drugstore, and they didn't carry them anymore, but they actually GAVE me one! So, check your yellow pages, etc. Sincerely, Carole M. Guest guest
Kathy, The only thing I can say about trying again with the cane in the opposite hand is, "try not to think about it"! I've found that people who concentrate on it too much do have trouble...especially if they've already started out wrong. Do you have a physical therapist with whom you could chat? Just a thought. My best to you, Carole M.
Guest guest
You can get an adjustable cane at Walgreens for twenty bucks, Aldi had them on sale for awhile for 10, (my wife bought 2). The kind with the little feet on the bottom cost a little more. If you're a veteran the VA will probably fix you up for free, but I've never seen anyone come from a private hospital with a cane at least not in many years. Guest guest
Hi Ed, Funny you say that because that is where I got my first cane the foldable one. The problem is I keep falling with it which leads me to believe I am not using it correctly or using the wrong kind. I guess I was hoping there was someone who can at least lead me in the right direction instead of trial and error/falling. Andy
Guest guest
Hi Andy, When I was pregnant and I needed more support I used walking sticks, which can be bought in sports shops. The advantage is: You get two, they don't cost much, and they are great support, a lot better than canes... Personally, I think investing in a cane or walking sticks is not a " big deal " , since the cost is less than for a pair of shoes. So waiting for the doctors to help and falling daily in the mean time is not a good option. Beata
Guest guest
Andy, see if an M.D. will prescribe you a cane. Mine did. Debbie
Guest guest
Hi everyone, I just saw this article in the Sunday paper, about this man who custom makes canes, I'm not pushing them just thought they are pretty cool. Once again, thank you Gretchen for all your hard work, Merry Christmas to all. http://www.canemaker.blogspot.com/ Lainie
