Guest guest
Hi Betty, My son had a similar surgery in October. He also lost a lot of muscle. I am glad to hear your son is feeling well enough to go to school. Was it hard having both feet done at once?
Guest guest
Hi Betty: I'm sorry to hear about your son and his infections after surgery. I hope all is well and he gets his exams completed. I know Toronto Sick Kid's is a great hospital, but something truly out of the ordinary must have gone wrong. I hope they don't think it is because of his CMT. I don't think there is any relationship? Anyway, I wish your son a speedy recovery. Regards,
Guest guest
Betty, I am sorry your son had such a tough time. Hope it is positive from this point on. I was very lucky. I had my ankle fused, arch lowered, big toe straightened, and in surgery for over 3 hours on 2-7-05 and here I am 4+ months later, walking barefoot in the house and walking well with a small brace in my shoe. I took pain meds for about 4-5 days after surgery--within a week I was down to one half a pill at night so I could sleep.I am having the time of my life doing simple things like standing in the shower without hanging on to something for balance, cooking without sitting on a stool, and enjoying a pain-free life for the first time in the last 10-12 years. I plan to have the other foot done in the fall or early winter. My surgeon is an absolute genius. Tell your son to hang in there. Life can be tough sometimes--I've had lots of tough times, but life can be so sweet too. I'll be dancing soon. Tom--age 58 and getting younger!! Guest guest
Hi Tom, Thank you! I read your post last week and I was so surprised that you had speedy recovery. My son had such hard time, I guess everyone is different. He had bad reactions to drugs even though doctors did not use drugs on our medical alert list as I insisted. He slept for three days after the surgery. I wish you the best for your second surgery and dance soon. Betty
Guest guest
Hi , It's hard having both feet done, but I thought it will be harder to go through surgery twice. I don't know if I had made right decision or not. How is your son doing now? Did he has a lot of pain after surgery? My son is still in pain. Guest guest
Hi Betty, Oh man, that is terrible for your son. I wish him well and hope all goes well for him. My daughter when she was 16 was diagnosed with CMT, that is how we all found out what the heck was in the family. She has pes cavus feet and three doctors told us to leave them alone because they do not hurt her, just look funny. Do not try surgery just for cosmetic purposes so she is now 25 and the feet still look the same and no surgery was ever done. I sure hope and pray as her Mother that I did the right thing for her. Best of luck to your son and you. He is in my prayers. Elaine
Guest guest
Thank you , We went to hospital this morning for check up and he is doing much better. Doctor explained that his wounds were opened because the swollen of his feet and that caused infection, it is unusual. One wound is still open and hope it will be closed in one or two weeks, the swollen has come down a lot. I do see a light in the end of tunnel now. Take care, Betty
Guest guest
Thank you Elaine, My son's CMT is severe compared to others and it has progressed very fast in last three years. He had brace for a year and it helped a lot, but his feet deformed so badly last year, a team of doctors from Sick Kids hospital made final decision that it's time for surgery. I know many CMTers has benefited from this kind of surgery. Of course, surgery should always be the last to consider. I wish you and your daughter all the best! Guest guest
Hi Betty, My son said he is in some pain still in the morning and evening. He goes in to get the other foot done in a few months. I would like him to get it done sooner. I also had the surgery that your son had and it took a while for the pain to go away.
